Teaching

Dissertation topics suggested by the teacher.

Students are kindly invited to contact me if possibly interested to one of the following topics for their final project:

1. Surface Wave Communications at THz / Optical Frequencies

Theoretical investigation of surface wave radiation and propagation for communication networks at THz and optical frequencies.

2. Air-to-Ground Propagation for UAVs assisted wireless communications

Analysis of measurements for the characterization of Air-to-Ground propagation.

3. Evaluation of Line of Sight Probability in Urban Environment for Wireless Communications

Investigation of Line of Site occurrence through a ray-based approach applied to different urban maps, aiming at the definition of analytical model for the Line of Sight probability in urban environment.

4. Urban measurement campaign for the assessment of 5G radio performance in real scenarios

Statistical analysis of measurement data for the design of 5G wireless networks. In collaboration with Wireless Future.

5. Physical Layer Security (PLS)

In collaboration with the Barkausen Institut of Dresden (GE), this activity aims at investigating data encryption techniques based on the physical properties of the propagation channel for secure wireless communications. Possible, specific topics include:

  • Radio channel measurements for data encryption
  • Assessment of the sensitivity of Physical Layer - based encryption techniques to the properties of the wireless channel
  • Development and analysis of new physical layer solutions for data encryption
  • RF hardware impact on PLS effectiveness
  • Quantum Key distribution

6. Communication and Sensing

This activity is also carried out in collaboration with the Barkausen Institut.

Wireless signals exchange for communication (data exchange) can be also beneficial for sensing the environment, e.g. to identify presence of position of objects surrounding the wireless devices. To what extent is this really possible ? Are the requirements for communications (in terms of waveform, propagation conditions, etc.) also good for sensing ? Is a trade off necessary ?

Possible, specific topics include:

  • Simulating mm-wave radar for autonomous driving;
  • Ray-tracing for radar signals
  • Intelligent-radar object recognition

7. Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface

Investigations on the ways Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces can be beneficial for the design and deployment of wireless systems in complex propagation scenarios.

Note: this is a general list of ongoing research activities. The actual availability of related topics for the final project can change depending on the stage of advancement of the work
