Principal Investigator (PI) for the research project Skank Bloc Bologna: Alternative Art Spaces Since 1977, winner of a grant under the 11th edition of the Italian Council (2022) – Scope 2, international promotion of artists, curators and critics – international publications, promoted by the Ministry of Culture - General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity.

Responsibility for studies and scientific research entrusted by MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna as part of the exhibition project “Immagini d'autore come opere e come fonti per la ricerca storica,” carried out thanks to funds from the PAC2021 – Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture, for which the project in question was the winner. Curated by Uliana Zanetti, the project stems from the section “Archival Surveys. Le Settimane Internazionali della Performance e gli anni ‘60 e ‘70 a Bologna e in Emilia-Romagna” within MAMbo's permanent collection. The entrusted study concerns the relationships and exchanges between scholars, artists, and curators in the cities of Bologna and New York in those years, relationships that reached their peak in the 6th edition of the International Week of Performance. The study in question is also aimed at writing an essay that will be published within a volume in the works.

Scientific responsibility, as Co-PI, of a research project entitled “Artist's Lives: The Documentary as a Tool for the Investigation and Dissemination of Contemporary Art” funded by the Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna under the “Alma Idea 2022” initiative based on a competitive call for proposals. Developed through the “Fund for the Promotion and Policy Development of the National Research Program” (PNR), this initiative is aimed at enhancing interdisciplinary research initiatives that explore topics of cross-cutting relevance to the PNR. The “Artist's Lives” research project is based on a dialogue between the fields related to SSDs L-Art/06 (Marco Cucco, PI) and L-Art/03 (Francesco Spampinato, Co-PI) and consists in the identification, mapping, and analysis of significant case studies to understand the importance of the audiovisual documentary as a tool for the investigation and dissemination of contemporary art.

Responsibility for scientific studies and research entrusted by Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, Rome, as part of the exhibition project “Videoart in Italy. Video Makes You Happy,” curated by Valentina Valentini, presented at Palazzo delle Esposizioni and the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Rome, April 1 – September 4, 2022. The project, developed in collaboration with the Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and the Ministry of Culture – Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea, was dedicated to video art and artist's cinema in Italy from the late 1960s to the present day. The studies and scholarly research entrusted contributed to the preparation and curatorship of the exhibition project, the development and articulation of the volume published by Treccani, the coordination of a section of this volume, the writing of two scholarly essays for the same volume, the curatorship of three film and video screenings presented within the exhibition project, and the organization and coordination of a study day.

Responsibility for scholarly studies and research entrusted by Fondazione Prada, Milan, as part of the exhibition project Whether Line: Lizzie Fitch/Ryan Trecartin (2019). The exhibition project focused on a large-scale multimedia installation through which American artists Lizzie Fitch and RyanTrecartin explored the concept of “new” promised land, as a metaphor for the desire to escape and the pervasiveness of the systems and technologies that interconnect us. The project also included a retrospective of films made by the artists since 2000, screened at the Fondazione Prada Cinema. This research led to the writing of an essay titled “The Schizophrenic Prosumer: Television in the Production of Lizzie Fitch and Ryan Trecartin,” published in the volume accompanying the exhibition project, which explores the work of the Fitch/Trecartin duo in light of the transformation of mass media brought about by the arrival of the Internet.

Participant, as a faculty of Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna, in the 22nd Curatorial Research Trip to Israel (June 16–23) sponsored by Artis, a New York-based independent nonprofit organization that supports contemporary Israeli art. Aim of the program is to provide leading members of the international art community with an immersive experience with the art scene in Israel, put them in contact with leading Israeli artists, curators and directors of museums and institutions of the State of Israel. The participation in the program has been the result of a selection based on a competitive call.
2018 – 2019
Creator and manager of the project Italia Periodica, a series of meetings promoted by Reading Room, Milan, dedicated to the study of magazines published in Italy from the 1950s to today. The goal was to set the foundations for a history of Italian periodic publishing as an experimental field of communication, cultural production and artistic expression.
2017 - 2018
Responsibility for scientific studies and research entrusted by Fondazione Prada, Milan, as part of the exhibition project Post Zang Tumb Tuuum. Art Life Politics: Italy 1918-1943 (2017-2018). Curated by Germano Celant, the project explored the system of art and culture in Italy between the two world wars, starting from the research and study of historical documents and photographs that reveal the spatial, social, and political context in which works of art were created, staged, experienced and interpreted by the public of the time. The study resulted in the writing of an essay titled “Machine, Monument, Dummy: The New Man in Italy,” published in the volume that accompanied the exhibition project, focusing on the idea of choreography in the 20-year period, that is, on the ways of representation and action of the body of the so-called “new man” in the visual arts and visual culture between the two world wars.

Coordinator for the Emilia-Romagna region of the Censimento degli Archivi della video arte e dei film d’artista in Italia. The project was directed by Cosetta Saba (University of Udine) and Valentina Valentini (Sapienza – University of Rome), promoted by the universities of Turin, Milan-Bicocca, Udine, and Sapienza – University of Rome, in collaboration with the Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo e la Documentazione (ICCD), and sponsored by the Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea, Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (MiBAC). The project led to the creation of the digital platform VARIA – Video ARte in ItaliA https://varia.beniculturali.it/ . Within the same project, from November 2018 to January 2019 he was awarded a scholarship for research activities issued by the University of Milan-Bicocca.

Creator and responsible for the development of a rehabilitation project of the exhibition space previously used by the design and interior company "Dino Gavina" in San Lazzaro di Savena, Bologna – a building designed in 1959 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni – in exhibition space, library and research center dedicated to the conservation and enhancement of Italian visual culture under the management of the Massimo and Sonia Cirulli Foundation, Bologna. For the same Foundation, he has developed an exhibition project – unrealized – for the Gagosian Gallery in New York, titled Futurist Reconstruction, exploring the utopian dimension of Futurism in art, design and visual culture.

Participation, as PhD candidate in Études Cinématographiques et Audiovisuelles (École doctorale: Arts et Médias, University: Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3, Paris), at the activities of LIRA – Laboratoire International de Recherches en Arts, Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris 3, Parigi. As part of this research group, he conducted in-depth studies on issues related to: experimental cinema and relations between cinema and other arts; theories, aesthetics and archeology of media; aesthetics and art history; criticism and theory of contemporary art; relationship between bodies and screens and between performing arts technologies.
