RESEARCH

At the beginning of his scientific activity he was involved in the synthesis and the study of bimetallic catalysts (Zn (II), Cu (II)) for the hydrolysis of phosphoric esters, to produce suitable units for the development of artificial restriction enzymes (DNA hydrolysis).

He then worked on the development of fluorescent chemosensors based on surfactant aggregates, to measure the concentration of metal ions in aqueous solution.

Later, his research interest shifted towards the design, synthesis and characterization of luminescent colloidal systems. In this new research activity he was initially involved in the development of luminescent sensors based on silica nanoparticles, to determine the concentration of biological and environmental relevant metal ions, and also in the synthesis of core-shell / Ag-silica nanoparticles with fluorescence amplification processes promoted by the presence of metal nanoparticles (MEF - Metal Enhanced Fluorescence).

The research field of silica doped nanoparticles with luminophores was then intensively analyzed by exploiting the analytical potential offered by organized systems containing an high number of chromophoric units. These systems have been applied effectively and in numerous examples in fluorescence imaging in vitro and in vivo, in the detection of analytes of environmental and biological interest and in applications related to electrochemically generated chemiluminescence (ECL - electrochemiluminescence). Very recently, his research interest is moving towards the development of systems able to combine diagnostic and therapeutic functions (theranostics).
