Edoardo Piermattei is a Postdoctoral Researcher based in Bologna. He currently serves as a Scientific and Educational Support Specialist at the Jean Monnet Chair in European Judicial Cooperation at the University of Bologna.

He has held appointments as an adjunct lecturer and teaching tutor in the Advanced Training Course entitled Techniques and Tools for the Management and Resolution of Disputes in International Trade.

He earned his PhD in Legal Sciences from the University of Bologna, defending a dissertation entitled International Commercial Courts: Reshaping the Modern Era of Adjudication. His research examines the evolving landscape of civil procedure beyond the domestic sphere, with a particular focus on cross-border litigation, civil procedural law, private international law, insolvency and restructuring law, the Rome I and Rome II Regulations, the Brussels I Recast Regulation, and the implications of artificial intelligence and crypto-assets for international dispute resolution.

During his doctoral studies, he was a Visiting Recognised Student at the Faculty of Law of the University of Oxford. He participated in the scholarly activities of the Institute of European and Comparative Law, the Public International Law Research Group at All Souls College, and the Procedural Justice and Evidence Discussion Group.

He has also undertaken research appointments as a Research Fellow at the Bank of Italy and INSOL Europe, contributing to projects concerning banking and corporate distress, European Union financial regulation, and the UNIDROIT Insolvency Project.

His research has been recognised through the award of Marco Polo research grants by the University of Bologna in two 2024 calls, supporting periods of study and research abroad. He was also awarded the Stichting Bob Wessels Insolvency Law Collection Prize for a presentation on the legal framework governing bank insolvency and restructuring.

In addition, he received a special mention in the context of the Bank of Italy’s Donato Menichella research grant, as well as a special mention at the Ninth OCI Prize of the Osservatorio sulle Crisi d’Impresa, a national award recognising outstanding scholarly work in insolvency law.
