Enrico Paolini received the five-year degree (summa cum laude) in Telecommunications Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electronic, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Bologna in 2003 and 2007, respectively.
During his Ph.D., he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Honolulu, HI, USA. From 2007 to 2010, he carried out postdoctoral research at the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems (DEIS) of the University of Bologna. From December 2010 to October 2015, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI), University of Bologna. Since October 2015, he has been an Associate Professor at the same department. In 2018, he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professorship.
His research activity focuses on digital communication systems, information theory, and remote sensing. His main research topics include error-correcting coding techniques (with emphasis on sparse graph-based codes and iterative decoding algorithms), grant-free multiple access schemes for next-generation wireless IoT networks, and detection and tracking algorithms for radar systems. Since 2004, he has been involved in several activities with the European Space Agency (ESA/ESOC). He has long collaborated with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), where he was a Visiting Scientist in 2012 and 2014.
Prof. Paolini is co-founder of the CNIT National Laboratory for Wireless Communications (CNIT/WiLab). In 2025, he served as Chair of the Radio Communications Committee of the IEEE Communications Society, and in 2022–2023, he was Chair of the IEEE Information Theory Society – Italy Section Chapter. He served as Editor for IEEE Transactions on Communications (Communication Theory area) from 2015 to 2020 and for IEEE Communications Letters from 2012 to 2015. He was Technical Program Chair for IEEE Globecom 2022 – Communication Theory Symposium, IEEE Globecom 2019 – Communication Theory Symposium, and the IEEE ICC 2014/2015/2016 Workshop on Massive Uncoordinated Access Protocols. He was also a member of the organizing committee of the 2020 IEEE Information Theory Workshop (General Co-Chair), the 2025 IEEE European School of Information Theory (Co-Chair), the 2018 IEEE European School of Information Theory (Co-Chair), and the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (Treasurer).
