Associate Professor at the University of Bologna, Dipartimento di Scienze Biomediche e Neuromotorie. Head of the 3rd Clinic (Orthopaedic Oncology) of Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli. He graduated from the School of Medicine in 1983. He got the
Specialisation degree in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1988. He
was further specialised Orthopaedic Oncologic Surgery with a
particular interest in reconstructive surgery of the limbs. Since
1983, he has hold as the first surgeon more than 2500 surgeries
most of which related to oncologic diseases. He has been working on
grafts and bone transplants since 1986 after having attended some
hospitals abroad as a research fellow: 6 months at the Harvard
Medical School in Boston at Massachussets General Hospital tutored
by Prof. Henry Mankin al Massachusetts General Hospital, and 6
months at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota tutored by Prof.
Franklin Sim. He contributed to the foundation of the
Musculoscheletal Tissue Bank of Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli which
he managed until 1997. He got the Diploma of the Specialisation
Course on Biomaterials in Prosthetic Surgery in 1995. In 1999 he
started his research activity on stem cells opening the Bone
Regeneration Laboratory and he started many preclinical and basic
research projects to study bone.
Some of his projects are:
-Study of the application of the demineralised matrix in
oncologic surgery. -Joint European study on the use of the Calcium
Solfate (Osteoset) in chronic osteomyelitis.
-Study of the expression of stromal totipotent cells in the
autologous bone marrow sample.
-Expanded autologous mesenchymal stem cells graft for the
regeneration of the bone in various clinical indications.
-Clinical study of the bone regeneration in the development of
bone cysts in young patients.
-Autologous bone marrow concentrate graft for bone regeneration
in femoral head necrosis.
-Aneurismatic cyst treatment by mininvasive surgery with
demineralised bone matrix and bone marrow concentrate.
-Experimental Clinical Study on the safety and effectiveness of
mesenchymal stem cells implant for the treatment of bone defects
"TCOR04" (Approved by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità)
All these projects were approved By the Ethics Committee of
Rizzoli Orthopaedic Institute.
Professor Donati worked as a Technical Expert at the Faculty of
Medicine of the University of Bologna from 1989 until 2002 and he
was hired as a researcher in 2002. He has been teaching at the
Faculty of Medicine since 1989. In September 2012 he was hired as
Associate Professor.
He is member of various commissions as well:
-Member of the Commission “Use of Osteoarticular Transplants and
Bone substitutes” of the Italian Society of Orthopaedics
-Member of the Regional Committee on Transplants “Technical
Commission on the Tissue Conservation and Transplants of Emilia
Romagna Region.
-Delegate of the National Committee of Transplants, Commission
on Tissues for Musculoscheletal Tissue.
-Member of the Scientific Committee of the Istituto Superiore di
Sanità.
