Carmela Fimognari earned her PhD in Toxicology in 1997 from the University of Bologna, Italy. After training at the GSF-National Research Centre for Environment and Health, Munich, Germany, she focused her research on cancer chemoprevention and therapy by natural compounds and synthetic analogues with cytostatic and cell death-inducing potential. She directs the Laboratory for Anticancer Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Department for Life Quality Studies of the University of Bologna. She was appointed Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2014 and Full Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2021, University of Bologna.
Carmela Fimognari’s research focuses on the development of novel anti-cancer drugs. As an example, plant-derived compounds represent an interesting source of novel leads with potent chemotherapeutic or chemopreventive activities. For example, she and her co-workers investigated isothiocyanates and anthocyanins, known to exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activities. Botanical drugs can also serve as chemopreventive and/or chemotherapeutic agents and attracted Dr Fimognari’s interest as a promising strategy in the oncological field.
Carmela Fimognari's scientific production consists in 143 original articles, 16 book chapters, and 2 short communications.
