A central area of his research concerns the position of third parties in the carriage of goods by sea. Initially examined as part of his doctoral research, this subject was subsequently developed in the monograph Third Party Protection in Shipping, published by Informa Law from Routledge. Several related publications explore the evolution of third-party protection, Himalaya clauses and the differences between English and US law. One of these works was included in an UNCITRAL bibliography concerning international transport law.
A second area of research concerns the digitalisation of trade and transport documents. The monograph The Electronic Bill of Lading: The Key of the Warehouse in the Digital Era examines the progressive dematerialisation of bills of lading and the legal issues arising from the use of electronic documents. This work forms part of a broader interest in artificial intelligence, blockchain and emerging technologies applied to shipping, logistics and mobility. His publications also address space law, space tourism and innovative transport systems, including Hyperloop.
Another key area concerns the relationship between transport, sustainability and environmental protection. His research has addressed ballast-water management, the decarbonisation of shipping, the evolution of charterparties in the context of the ecological transition, short-sea shipping and the carriage of live animals by sea. The latter has been examined from the perspectives of international law, animal welfare and possible reform of the existing regulatory framework. Publications on the carriage of live animals and other aspects of maritime transport have been cited in bibliographies issued by UNCITRAL and the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport.
The research also covers the interaction between maritime and insolvency law, corporate restructuring in the shipping industry, maritime piracy, security and migration by sea. In the fields of economics and logistics, the monograph The Role of Logistics in Boosting the Italian Agribusiness: China’s Belt and Road Initiative Scenario and related publications examine the role of logistics in the development of the Italian agri-food sector and the effects of the Belt and Road Initiative. This research also resulted in an article published in Land Use Policy.
