Alessandro Vanelli-Coralli received the Dr. Ing. Degree (cum laude) in Electronics Engineering and the Ph.D. in Electronics and Computer Science from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1991 and 1996, respectively.
In 1996, he joined the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering - Guglielmo Marconi (formerly Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems) at the University of Bologna, where, since 2021, he has been a Full Professor, serving as Research Deputy of the Department Director.
Since March 2022, he is a Research Fellow in the Digital Integrated Circuits and Systems group at ETH Zurich (CH) working on RISC-V based multicore platforms for 5G and 6G signal processing.
From 2013 to 2018 he had been the Chairperson of the Ph.D Board in Electronics, Telecommunications, and Information Technologies.
From January to June 2021, he had been a Visiting Professor at ETH Zurich working on IoT software defined radio. In 2003 and 2005, he had been a Visiting Scientist at Qualcomm Inc. (San Diego, CA), working in the Corporate R&D Department on Mobile Communication Systems on CDMA based systems and interference management and cancellation.
His research activity focuses on Wireless Communication with specific emphasis on 5G and 6G systems and Non-Terrestrial Networks. His pioneer works on heterogeneous satellite networks in 2009 set the basis for the concept of 3D multidimensional networks, also know as Non-terrestrial Networks (A. Vanelli-Coralli et al. "The ISICOM Architecture [https://www.researchgate.net/publication/224603652_The_ISICOM_architecture]," 2009 International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications))
He participates in national and international research projects on satellite mobile communication systems serving as Scientific Responsible and Prime Contractor for several European Space Agency and European Commission funded projects. He is responsible for the Digicomm Research group [https://site.unibo.it/digicomm/en] at the University of Bologna counting 11 research members (2023).
He participates to industrial and scientific fora and bodies. He is currently the Responsible for the Vision and Research Strategy task force of the NetworldEurope SatCom Working Group, and he is the delegate for the University of Bologna in the 6G-IA, ETSI, and 3GPP.
He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Restart Foundation (https://www.fondazione-restart.it/) focusing on the Telecommunications of the Future in the framework of the Recovery Funds plan.
Dr. Vanelli-Coralli has been appointed member of the Editorial Board of the Wiley InterScience Journal on Satellite Communications and Networks and has been guest co-Editor for several special issues in of international scientific journals. Dr. Vanelli-Coralli has served in the organization committees of scientific conferences and since 2010 he is the general Co-Chairman of the IEEE ASMS Conference.
He co-authored more than 290 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and conferences (see: scopus profile [https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=6603207358] or google scholar profile [https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=list_works&hl=en&user=GInxaQUAAAAJ] ) and he is co-recipient of several the Best Paper Awards.
Dr. Vanelli-Coralli is an IEEE Senior Member and the 2019 recipient of the 2019 IEEE Satellite Communications Technical Recognition Award [http://ssc.committees.comsoc.org/awards/]
