Stefano Lo Cigno

Stefano Lo Cigno is a Tenure-Track Researcher in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Bologna, where he teaches Japanese language and linguistics. He received both his Master’s degree and PhD in Linguistics from Kyoto University, while concurrently teaching at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies and Ritsumeikan University.

His research lies at the intersection of linguistics, media studies, and translation, with a particular focus on Humor Studies, audiovisual translation, and interlingual subtitling. In parallel, he conducts research on Japanese dialectology and contemporary Japanese mystery and horror fiction. His work explores the role of language, humour, and media practices in contemporary Japanese society, with particular attention to identity construction, linguistic variation, and intercultural dynamics.

Alongside his academic research, he works as a literary translator from Japanese into Italian, specialising primarily in contemporary Japanese mystery, noir, and horror fiction.
