CURRICULUM VITAE OF PROFESSOR STEFANO FAENZA
Professor Stefano Faenza was born in Bologna on 3rd April 1948.
He completed his high school diploma in Science in 1967.
In the academic year 1967-1968 he enrolled in the Faculty of
Medicine of the University of Bologna. On 30th July 1973 he
presented a degree dissertation on the "Anatomo-pathological
modifications of the lung after protracted automatic ventilation”
being awarded the highest mark of 110/110 cum laude.
After getting his degree he did a four-month long internship at
the Italian Hospital and the Whittington St.
Mary's Hospital, London. After serving in the Italian Army
as a draft soldier, he attended the Intensive Care Unit of the
Karolinska Sjukhuset in Stockhom for two-months.
From 30th July 1973 to 1st October 1975 he worked at the
Institute of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care as a Medical Doctor,
with assistance duties. From October 1975 he filled the role of
supply University Assistant at the Institute for Anaesthesiology
and Intensive care, until his admission as a researcher in 1980,
subsequently confirmed in 1983. He became a specialist in
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care with top marks (70/70 cum
laude), in Vascular Surgery, with 70/70 cum laude, in
Biomedical Technologies with a mark of 42/50 and in Respiratory
Physiopathology, with a mark of 70/70 cum laude. In the
examination session of 1983 he obtained consultant status in
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care with a mark of 98 out of 100.
Since the academic year 1998/99 he has been a member of the
Presidency Board of the Faculty of Medicine. Following the
ministerial decree dated 1st October 1999 he was the winner of a
post as Full University Professor in the second tier for the group
F21X Anaesthesiology in the competition issued following the
ministerial decree dated 22.12.95 and 29.2.96. Following the
President's Decree no. 42 dated 28/01/02 of the University of
Udine, he was decreed to be suitable for the position of Senior
Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, scientific discipline
sector F21X-Anaesthesiology tendered in the Government Gazette no
1, IV special series, dated 17th October 2000. He was called to
work for the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Bologna on
27th December 2004, concluding an Extraordinary three-year period
with the promotion to the role of Full Professor. He won the tender
for the Operative Module of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care for
the activity of liver and multiorgan transplant and is in charge of
the Intensive Care and the Operating Theatres dedicated to that
activity.From 01/11/2011 has been charged of the
Direction of Anesthesthesia and Intensive Care Unit of
University of Bologna
TEACHING DUTIES
At present he has the Chair of the following subjects: Pain
Therapy, Intensive Care, Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care in the
Post-Graduate School of Gynaecology and Obstetrics- F area;
Gynaecology; Anaesthesiology and Intensive care for the G area;
Obstetrics and Intensive care for the H area, Oncological
Gynaecology.
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care for the Post-Graduate School
of Internal Medicine.
Anaesthesiology, Intensive Care and School of Specialisation in
Sports Medicine. Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (two-year
course). Respiratory and Cardiocirculatory Intensive Care in the
Post-Graduate School of respiratory Diseases. Pain Therapy in the
Post-Graduate School of Thoracic Surgery. Anaesthesiology in the
Post-Graduate School of Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases.
Anaesthesiology at the Post-Graduate School of General Surgery. He
is in charge of five courses within the Post-Graduate School of
Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care. Since the academic year
2002-2003 he has been in charge of the course of Anaesthesiology
and Intensive care in the three-year degree courses in Podology and
Orthopaedic Technician. Within the scope of the Undergraduate
Degree in Medicine he won the tender for the Chair in the Intensive
Care (Art. 12, Law no. 341/90) in the academic years 1994-95,
1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, and 1998-99. He kept the teaching
position in the role of Interim and Full Professor until the
present day. On 6th September 2005 he was elected Director of the
Post-Graduate School of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care of the
University of Bologna for the three-year period 2005-2008. For the
present, he has been re-elected for the three-year period
2008-2011.
SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY
In 2005 he was elected to the Managing Council of the Italian
Society of Organ Transplants contributing to keeping alive the
presence of the Bolognese School in the Scientific Sessions of this
Society, being subsequently re-elected in that post until 2011. He
has been Referee for the Intensive Care Medicine and for
Minerva Anestesiologica.
Given the skills he has acquired in the field respiratory
disease research, on the hemoperfusion technique and on the
techniques of transfusion savings and transplants, he has been
invited a number of times as a speaker at both national and
international Congresses. Professor Faenza's communications and
papers, along with his book chapters and papers printed in national
and international journals, total 180 publications, along with a
student's textbook on Medical Surgical Emergencies and 12 chapters
of books on Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care.
