Sonia Melandri received her degree in Chemistry from the
University of Bologna (110/110 summa cum laude) in 1990 and her PhD
title in Chemical Sciences in 1994. From 1994 to 1998 she worked at
the CNR and at the University of Bologna as a postdoctoral fellow.
From 1998 to 2011 she has been researcher in Physical Chemistry at
the University of Bologna and in March 2011 she was appointed
Associate Professor. Since May, 3rd 2015 she is Deputy-Head of the
Dipartimento di Chimica "G. Ciamician".
In various occasions Sonia Melandri was visiting scientist at
the University of Valladolid (Spain), at the University of Hannover
(Germany) and at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and at the
Elettra synchrotron.
The research activity of Sonia Melandri is focused on the study
of conformational and tautomeric equilibria and large amplitude
motions in molecules and weakly bound molecular complexes by means
of spectroscopy (mainly microwave spectroscopy ) in thermally
equilibrated systems, in free jet expansions and in rare gas
matrixes.
Her studies In particular concern:
- Conformational and tautomeric equilibria, large amplitude
motions in flexible molecules of chemical and biological interest
(biogenic amines, neurotransmitters and fluorinated
derivatives).
- Effects of microsolvation on conformation and molecular
motions (water, rare gases, ammonia)
- Spectroscopic characterization of molecules and molecular
complexes of astrophysical interest
- Quantum chemical methods (ab initio, DFT) and other methods
(flexible model, distributed polarisability model and electrostatic
models) to characterize conformational minima and potential energy
surfaces.
- Design assembly and upgrading of microwave spectrometers in
supersonic expansions.
