Academic discipline: L-ANT/05 Papyrology

Short Bio

I am Associate Professor of Papyrology at the Department of Cultural Heritage since July 2022. Before then, I worked in the United States and Great Britain. From 2009 to 2022, I was Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, where I taught various course units in papyrology, Roman history, and Graeco-Roman material culture and I am currently Honorary Research Affiliate.

My research includes both editions of papyri and broader studies on the history of Egypt under the Roman and Byzantine empires. Most recently, I have written on issues of academic ethics in publishing manuscripts, the colonial history of papyrology, and the legal and illegal market in papyri and other Egyptian antiquities. This research has developed into an Impact Case Study for the Research Excellence Framework of 2021 (rated 4*).

My book Stolen Fragments: Black Markets, Bad Faith, and the Illicit Trade in Ancient Artefacts will be out in September 2024 for Redwood Press/Stanford University Press. My agent is Doug Young, at Pew Literary Agency London.
