Current activities

  • Digestive endoscopy: diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI procedures and endoscopic ultrasound (polypectomy/mucosectomy, stent placement, hemostasis, PEG, diagnostic and therapeutic EUS)
  • Hepatology: therapy and follow up of patients affected from HBV, HCV, NASH, autoimmune hepatitis, and cirrhosis.
  • Clinical research: various fields of application of endoscopic ultrasonography, including enhancement with contrast agents (Sonovue) and study of EUS-FNB outcomes.

Work/practice history

  • 2017-present: Director of the Gastrointestinal Unit at the Hospital of Imola/University of Bologna, Italy
  • 1998-present: Clinical research in the field of endoscopic ultrasonography, with special interest for the application of the technique in patients affected from gastric lymphomas and submucosal tumors. Publication of original articles, reviews, guidelines. Oral presentations at national and international meetings on these topics.
  • 1997-present: Digestive Endoscopy, including upper and lower endoscopy, both diagnostic and operative, and endoscopic ultrasonography, including fine needle aspiration/biopsy/drainage.
  • 2008: 1-month stage in the USA (at Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, FL and at University of Alabama, Birmingham, AL).
  • 2006-2007: regulatory experience of clinical trials for human use of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells.
  • 2005-2017: clinical activity in hepatology as director of the Program of Hepatology.
  • 2002-2017: working at Gastroenterology Unit, director Prof. G. Caletti, University of Bologna at Castel S. Pietro Terme Hospital (AUSL di Imola). Main activity: digestive endoscopy.
  • 2000: Clinical research in the field of patients affected from gastroesophageal reflux disease (first Italian experience with the STRETTA procedure) and Barrett's esophagus.
  • 1999: 1-month stage at prof. Classen's Endoscopy Unit at Klinikum Rechts der Isar, Munich.
  • 1995-1997: Clinical research and medical practice in the field of hepatology, seeing patients with hepatitis B and C, and primary biliary cirrhosis. Principal investigator in a clinical trial evaluating the safety profile of the drug “Interleukin 12” for patients with hepatitis C.
