Associate professor at the University of Bologna since 2013, he carries out his research in the field of neurology, clinical neurobiology and neuropathology. His research interests are mainly focused on prion and prion-like neurodegenerative diseases. Current research projects include the study of the molecular basis of prion strains and phenotypic variability and the development and validation of biomarkers for early clinical diagnosis and prognostic evaluation of neurodegenerative diseases. He is engaged in national and international research projects, collaborates with various National (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Istituto IRCCS Carlo Besta) and Foreign Institutes (University of Edinburgh, UK; LMU Munich, Germany; VM Amsterdam, the Netherland, Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan; CWRU, Cleveland, OH, and RM Lab NIAID, NIH, Hamilton, MA, USA). He has authored numerous publications in prestigious international journals. He is a member of the Editorial board of Acta Neuropathologica (I.F. 18.172, ranked 1st in the discipline Pathology).
