- Born in Alessandria (Italy) 01/08/1956. Degree in Medicine with 110/110 at the University of pavia in 1980 Accademic Year. Qualification as a Medicine Doctor at the University of Pavia in 1981. Specialization in Infectious Diseases at he University of Pavia in 1985 . Specialization in Clinical and laboratory Haematology at the University of Pavia in 1993. House Resident at the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Clinic in the Teaching Hospital of Pavia, then Senior Consultant at the Infectious Diseases Division of Piacenza and successively at the Infectious and Tropical Diseases in the Teaching Hospital of Brescia / University of Brescia. Assistant Professor of Infectious diseases in the University of Udine from 2001 to 2006. Professor of Infectious Diseases in the University of Udine from November 2006 to December 2009. Professor of Infectious Diseases in the University of Bologna from December 2009 up to now.

Head of the Clinic of Infectious Diseases - Teaching Hospital of Udine from 2002 to 2009. Head of the Clinic of Infectious Diseases - Teaching Hospital of Bologna from 2009 up to now.

Member of the National Committee for drugs evaluation at Health Italian Ministry from 1999 up to 2004.

He acts as a infectious diseases consultant in several settings such as intensive care units, haematology, liver, kidney and heart transplant units, cardiosurgery, neurosurgery and orthopaedics. He is active in epidemiological and intervention studies on infetious risk in several nosocomial setting, including pharmacokinetics studies for treatment optimization of infectious diseases, and in clinical trials on new anti-infettive drugs.

He has published 527 scientific papers and given more than 200 lectures in national and international congresses.
