After graduating in Physics in 1993 at the University of Pisa as a student of the Scuola Normale Superiore, he obtained a PhD from the University of Bologna in 1996. From 1997 to 2020 he worked at the University of Camerino. Since 2020, he is associate professor in Theoretical Physics at the University of Bologna, Italy. His main research interests are in the field of quantum many-body systems, in particular the physics of ultracold gases, superfluids and superconductors. He has made significant contributions to the theory of the BCS-BEC crossover. He is author of about 100 papers in international journals.
