Graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1985 from the University of Bologna. He obtained a specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1989, a specialization in Urology in 1994, and a specialization in General Surgery in 1999, all from the University of Bologna.

Academic Career
After several years as a contract professor (1998–2016) at the University of Bologna, teaching in the School of Specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology, he was appointed Associate Professor in the academic field MED/40 at the University of Bologna on April 1, 2016.
As of October 1, 2024, he is Full Professor in the academic field MEDS-21/A (Gynecology and Obstetrics) at the same university.
Teaching Activity
Since 1998, he has continuously taught as a course leader in various postgraduate specialization schools, including Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medical Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy, Pediatrics, and General Surgery.
Currently, he is a lecturer in the integrated course of Gynecology and Obstetrics within the Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna. He also teaches at the School of Midwifery.
He organizes and coordinates seminars and advanced courses in his areas of expertise.
He serves as a tutor for medical residents in the School of Specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Since 2021, he has been Director of the Second-Level Master’s Program in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Bologna.
He also teaches in the Second-Level Master's Program in Lymphology, and is a member of the Board of the PhD Program in Health and Technology at the University.
Director and Coordinator of the Electrochemotherapy Clinical Training Programme - European ECT Training Centre.
Scientific Activity
He has participated in numerous national and international research programs, including several clinical studies with the MITO Group (Multicentre Italian Trials in Ovarian Cancer and Gynecologic Malignancies).
He is Principal Investigator in several national and international research projects in the field of oncology.
He serves as a referee for international and national journals in the fields of surgical and oncological gynecology (e.g., Gynecology and Pelvic Medicine, Experimental and Molecular Pathology, Cancers).

He has participated in humanitarian missions with various organizations in Sierra Leone (Médecins Sans Frontières), Angola (Médecins du Monde), Mozambique, and South Sudan.
Since 2016, the Gynecologic Oncology center he directs at the S. Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital has been recognized as a European Training Centre in Gynecologic Oncology by ESGO (European Society of Gynecologic Oncology) and has received certification in Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery from the same society.
