Petros Ampatzidis

Research fellow

Department of Physics and Astronomy "Augusto Righi"

Short Bio

Petros is a Research Fellow at the Department of Physics and Astronomy and participates in the RISKADAPT project, working with Prof Silvana di Sabatino and Dr Carlo Cintolesi, focusing on the numerical modelling of the impact extreme weather events have on high-rise buildings.

His research has also concerned the processes governing the interaction between blue spaces (lakes, ponds) and the urban environment. Using the OpenFOAM CFD library, he has assessed blue spaces' role in mitigating the Urban Heat Island. In collaboration with the University of Bologna, he has developed a novel solver that captures evaporation phenomena to provide a first insight into the impact of geometry and atmospheric stability conditions on the overall performance of blue space as a climate change mitigation strategy.

Petros has worked on strategies for the decarbonisation of the building stock at scale. In a collaboration with the Bath and North East Somerset Council, his research, which concerned the analysis of energy performance certificates and household deprivation data, has offered important new insights for governments and suggested a rethinking of retrofit initiatives.
