Petros Ampatzidis

Research fellow

Department of Physics and Astronomy "Augusto Righi"

Short Bio

Petros completed his doctorate at the Centre for Doctoral Training in the Decarbonisation of the Built Environment (dCarb) at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, UK. His research focused on the processes governing the interaction between blue spaces (e.g. lakes and ponds) and the urban environment. OpenFOAM, an open-source computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, was the main tool for investigating blue spaces' role in mitigating the Urban Heat Island. In collaboration with the University of Bologna, he has developed a novel solver able to capture the evaporation phenomena and provided a first insight into the impact of blue space geometry and background atmospheric stability conditions on the overall performance of blue space as a climate change mitigation strategy.

Currently, Petros participates in the RISKADAPT project, working closely with Professor Silvana di Sabatino and Dr Carlo Cintolesi. His research focuses on the numerical modelling of the impact of extreme weather events, i.e. extreme wind and wind-driven rain, on high-rise buildings
