Nicolò Cavina was born on January 29, 1972. In 1997, he received the BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bologna, while in 2002 he received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering at the same University, as part of the curriculum "Highly efficient energy systems". Between 1998 and 1999 he was visiting PhD student at the Ohio State University Powertrain Control And Diagnostics Laboratory (PCAD LAB), Columbus, OH, USA, under the supervision of Professor Giorgio Rizzoni.
In 2019 he was appointed Full Professor of Internal Combustion Engines and Hybrid Powertrains at Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna - Italy, for the Department of Industrial Engineering - Academic discipline: ING-IND/08 Fluid Machinery
In 2010 he was appointed Associate Professor at Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna - Italy, for the Department of Industrial Engineering - Academic discipline: ING-IND/08 Fluid Machinery
In 2002 he became Assistant Professor at the of University of Bologna. Since 2010 he is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Bologna.
In 2008 he was appointed Faculty Advisor of the University of Bologna Collegiate Chapter of SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).
Nicolò Cavina has held various courses on thermo-fluid machines, with emphasis on internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles, and the issues related to their control and diagnosis. Since 2006 he teaches courses on Modelling and Control of Internal Combustion Engines and Hybrid Powertrains and Internal Combustion Engines Testing, to last year Mechanical Engineering students, at the University of Bologna, Italy.
The scientific activity mainly concerns control-oriented modelling of internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles. The research, which led to the publication of more than 90 scientific papers and of various industrial patents, was developed in collaboration with international research centres (CAR, Center for Automotive Research, Ohio State University, Prof. Giorgio Rizzoni, ETH, Zurich Polytechnic, Prof. Lino Guzzella; PCRL, Powertrain Control Research Laboratory, University of Wisconsin, Prof. JJ Moskwa), and major automotive companies (Alfa Romeo, Aprilia, Automobili Lamborghini, Borghi & Saveri, Ducati, Ferrari, FEV GmbH, IAV GmbH, Magneti Marelli, Maserati, Piaggio).
In 2002 he founded, with three colleagues, Alma Automotive srl, a spin-off company of the University of Bologna. Since then he has served as member of the board and vice-president.

The scientific activity has been ongoing, and is still ongoing, at the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIN) of the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna, and mainly focuses on the modeling directed to the control and diagnosis of internal combustion engines and hybrid vehicles. 1998-2000 Participant of a European Commission Funded Project (FP7), in collaboration with Lamborghini Automobili S.p.A., EFI Technology, and ENEA. The Project was related to the reduction of exhaust gas emissions of a V12 high-performance engine.
