Matteo Mura, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Management Engineering at the Department of Management, University of Bologna.
His research focuses on performance measurement and management systems, with a particular emphasis on sustainable transitions in firms and value chains, decarbonization strategies, and the circular economy.
He collaborates with research centers in the United Kingdom, Australia, Switzerland, Germany, and Brazil, and has coordinated research projects funded by the European Commission, the Italian Ministry of Ecological Transition, and private sector organizations.
He has published 53 journal articles, 42 of which are indexed in international databases, and 8 book chapters, including 4 in international volumes. He has presented at 104 national and international conferences, including 19 invited talks, among them at the European Commission.
His research has appeared in academic journals such as the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Regional Studies, Business Strategy and the Environment, Organization & Environment, Production Planning & Control, among others. He serves on the Editorial Boards of the International Journal of Operations and Production Management and the International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management.
His research work has received national and international recognition, including the Abbie Griffin High Impact Award 2024, Top Cited Paper Award 2019–2020, and Tom Hustad Outstanding Paper Award 2019 from the Journal of Product Innovation Management, as well as the Chris Voss Highly Commended Award 2012 from the European Operations Management Association (EurOMA).
He is actively involved in third mission activities, institutional roles, and public engagement. Since 2020, he has been the Director of the Centre for Sustainability and Climate Change at Bologna Business School, where he has also served as Associate Dean since 2024. He is Chair of the PRME Chapter Italy. He has been a Teaching Associate at Warwick Business School and a Visiting Fellow at Cranfield School of Management. He has published popular science articles and given interviews to major newspapers such as Il Sole 24 Ore, Corriere della Sera, and La Repubblica.
In 2021, he co-founded B-PLAS sbrl, a spin-off of the University of Bologna specializing in the design and construction of plants for the production of bioplastics from sewage sludge.
In terms of teaching, he has held courses at undergraduate, graduate, MBA, and Executive Education levels, both in Italy and abroad. He currently serves as Director of two Executive Masters and one University Master’s program at Bologna Business School.
He also teaches in the interdepartmental PhD program in "Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges" at the University of Bologna, to which the Department of Management contributes alongside other departments of the University.
