Graduate in Industrial Chemistry in 1993 at the Bologna University
and Doctorate in Industrial Chemistry at the University of Bologna
discussing his PhD thesis at the Politecnico di Milano in 1996 with
"Excellent" evaluation. He started his scientific activity in 1994
studying the synthesis and the properties of many new
3-alkylthiophenes analyzing some practical aspects (reactivity,
solubility, polymerizability and environmental stability).
Afterwards he has developed researches on functionalized
polythiophenes, analyzing the polymerization reaction in different
conditions, the p-doping process with some oxidizing agents and the
thermal and electrical properties of the final materials. From 1998
he takes an interest for the polymeric systems with extended
p-conjugation, developing in particular the synthesis and the
characterization of new soluble and workable polythiophenes with
thermochromic and solvatochromic properties. He has studied the
solvatochromism of some poly[3-(w-hydroxyalkyl)thiophene]s
highlighting the ability of the hydroxy group to confer some
unusual chromic behaviours, strongly dependent from the
environmental conditions. In the last four years he has addressed
the research toward the synthesis of new thiophene monomers
3-alkyl-functionalized with NLO chromophoric goups in side chain.
The correspondent polymers have been obtained with different
techniques: by direct polymerization of the monomers (via FeCl3) or
by post-functionalization of a reactive polythiophenic precursors
and they are studied as new materials for opto-electronic
applications. He is author or co-author of more than 60 papers in
international journals regarding ICPs (intrinsecally conducting
polymers).
