Curriculum Vitae
Masoud Banan Dallalian is currently a PhD candidate in Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges at the University of Bologna. His research focuses on wave energy converters, with particular focus on the interaction of wave-floating bodies through numerical modeling and experimental investigations.
Academic and Professional Experience
From 2021 to 2024, he worked as a Coastal Engineer, contributing to research projects involving numerical modeling of waves, hydrodynamics, and sediment transport. Prior to this, he served as a Research Assistant (2018–2021), where he conducted numerical simulations of tropical cyclones, storm surges, and coastal flooding, and evaluated nature-based solutions such as mangrove forests for flood risk reduction. Between 2016 and 2018, he worked as a Civil Engineer, performing site inspections, technical reporting, and design calculations.
Education
He received his M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (Marine Structures), where his thesis focused on the numerical investigation of breakwater geometrical parameters and their effects on port sedimentation. He previously obtained his B.Sc. in Civil Engineering, with strong academic performance in courses such as hydraulics, programming, and engineering statistics.
Teaching Activity
He is currently a tutor at the University of Bologna for courses related to Ocean and Coastal Engineering and Marine Renewable Energy Sources (2025–2026).
Scientific Activity and Peer Reviewed Journal Publications
His research activity focuses on coastal engineering, wave modeling, and climate-related hazards. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed journal publications in international journals such as Ocean Engineering, Atmosphere, and Regional Studies in Marine Science. His work includes topics such as Bayesian modeling for flood risk assessment, wave generation under tropical cyclones, and nature-based coastal protection strategies. He is also involved in ongoing research on wave energy converters in the Mediterranean Sea.
Conferences
In addition to journal publications, he has contributed to international conferences in the field of coastal and marine engineering. His recent work includes studies on wave energy extraction and coastal hydrodynamics, presented at scientific conferences and currently under submission.
Awards and Scholarships
He is the recipient of a competitive, fully funded PhD scholarship from the University of Bologna (2024). He also received a research data grant during his M.Sc. studies and an academic scholarship awarded to high-performing undergraduate students at the University of Tabriz.
Technical Skills
He has advanced experience in numerical and engineering software including Nemoh, Capytaine, WEC-Sim, and MIKE Zero, as well as working knowledge of MATLAB, QGIS, AutoCAD, and OpenFOAM.
