Student's guidelines for online written exams

Online written exams

Student’s guidelines

  1. How to carry out the exam

The written exam will be taken via the online platforms EOL and Zoom, while the oral exam will be taken via Teams. It is therefore needed to download previously the applications Zoom and Teams.

The exam committee can choose a different use of these applications if needed.

Please read carefully the following webpage: https://www.unibo.it/en/services-and-opportunities/online-services/online-services-for-students-1/lessons-and-exams-online on the section “How to take a written exam online via Zoom” (andHow to take a written exam online via Microsoft Teams).

In brief, it is required to:

    1. Download the Zoom app and log on using Unibo’s credentials.
Watch out! When logging on, it is paramount to click on “Sign in with SSO" and enter unibo.zoom.us in the following step.

    2. Insure the webcam and the microphone work properly on Zoom.

    3. Go to the computer’s settings and authorize the screen’s sharing (those having a Mac might be required to go to the menu “Privacy”)

Students must be sure that computer’s audio and microphone are fully operational, as well as having another input device (for instance a smartphone, tablet or another computer). Those using a smartphone ought to keep it charging during the exam in order not to bank on the battery.

  2. Setting up the workstation

It is imperative to set up the workstation in a room where no one else is allowed. Under no circumstances are other people to enter the room during the exam.

Likewise, it is essential to disable any cloud-synchronizing’s client (Dropbox, Onedrive, Google Backup & Sync), with that being visible on the taskbar’s icons. It is also forbidden to deploy any messaging’s client

(Whatsapp web, Telegram web, Twitter, etc,) on any device (computer, smartphone, tablet etc).

Students must use one screen only, that being checked before the test begins.

It is worth noting the Assessing Professors can perform random checks, for instance asking Students to show the files which they are working on. Consequently, it is recommended to move any private items (photos, messages…) in order not to show them.

The software required for the exam must be already installed and operational on the computer (that is, the software deployed during classes).

    • Microsoft word, adobe acrobat reader i.e. PDF readers, text editors, ZIP generators.

  3. Connection

The Internet connection must be stable, a landline connection being preferred. Please block any activities which might make the line engaged (downloads, updates etc). We suggest keeping the smartphone primed as hotspot, in order to have a “B plan” should the main connection be lost.

Staying always online is essential in order for the exam to run off smoothly. Short-lived, network-motivated disconnections are allowed as long as they are episodic. The candidates can carry on the exam only if they are swiftly back online.

The student must act fairly, otherwise the exam will be invalidated and the student will have to repeat it over the subsequent calls.

The Professor - when grading the test - can anyway decide on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the disconnections occurred.

Logging off or leaving the workstation before the end of the test implies giving up on it. The exam will thus be invalidated.

4. What to do on the exam’s day
  1. Prime the workstation according to the previous Section 2 Setting up the workstation.
  2. Log on to eol.unibo.it in time (at least 15 minutes in advance) so as to verify the exam’s virtual room is available.
  3. Click on “Zoom Meeting” to enter the virtual room and turn the webcam on: the system will put you on hold. Students will be allowed in upon identification.
The waiting time might be substantial if the number of students booked is high. Punctuality is therefore of paramount importance.
  4. The Teacher will divide students into several breakout rooms, each of them supervised by a warden who will ask you to keep the screen shared: that is absolutely essential for a smooth running of the test.
  5. When you are told to do so, log on to EOL and start off the test. Please never leave the Zoom’s virtual room and always keep the screen shared.
  6. When the test is over, write on the chat and leave the Zoom meeting.

  1. FAQ
  • Can I leave for a few minutes? No.
  • If the software does not run smoothly or a message error appears, can I ask for assistance? You can ask help to the exam committee via chat. If the problem will not be resolved quickly the exam will be invalidated.
  • What if the screen’s sharing ends? The exam will be invalidated.
  • What if the connection goes accidentally offline? The exam will be invalidated unless different decision by the professors.
  • Considering the actual pandemic emergency context students are recommended to behave properly.
