Graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Bologna on July 16, 1976.

Specialist with honours in Internal Medicine at the University of Bologna on July 16, 1981.

Specialist with honours in Gastroenterology at the University of Bologna on July 18, 1985.

University assistant and university researcher at the Clinical Medicine of the University of Bologna respectively from March  16, 1977 to July 31, 1980 and from August 1, 1980 to November 13, 1987.

Associate professor of Internal Medicine of the University of Bologna from November 14, 1987 to October 31, 2001.

Full professor of Internal Medicine of the University of Bologna from November 1, 2001 up to October 2021.

Emeritus professor of the University of Bologna from 2023.

Director of an Internal Medicine Unit at the University General Hospital S.Orsola-Malpighi of Bologna from September 2000 up to now.

Director of the postgraduate School in Geriatrics of the University of Bologna from 2007 to 2012 and from 2016 to 2019.

Director, from 2010 to 2012, of the Department of Internal Medicine, Aging and Nephrology of the University of Bologna.

Director, from 2012 to 2018, of the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences of the University of Bologna.

From 1987 member of research groups which obtained grants from the Ministry of Education-University and from Emilia-Romagna region.

Author of more than 870 scientific publications: 283 full papers on international journals quoted in Journal Citation Reports 2021 (total Impact Factor >3000), 132 full papers on national/international journals/books, and more than 450 abstracts on proceedings of national/international medical congresses.

Principal research fields:

1.       Studies on physiopathology and treatment of portal hypertension.

2. Study and definition of the functional and instrumental parameters which may contribute to define the prognosis in patients with liver cirrhosis.

3. Ultrasonography and echo-Doppler for the study of various pathologies in internal medicine and geriatrics.

4. Functional, metabolic and instrumental changes in the aging process with population studies.

5. Prognostic factors in Stroke.

6. Hepatocellular carcinoma: epidemiology, natural history and treatment.
