Bio and Education

Born in Bologna, Italy, on August 21st, 1984.

In 2003, he graduated at Liceo Scientifico Statale "N. Copernico", Bologna, math & computer science curriculum, final score: 100/100.

In December 2006, he received the Bachelor degree cum laude in Management Engineering (Industrial Engineering sector) at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy. Dissertation title: “Comparative study of assembly line balancing techniques to face the Single Assembly Line Balancing Problem (SALBP)”, Advisor: Prof. Emilio Ferrari.

In December 2008, he received the Master degree cum laude in Management Engineering (Industrial Engineering sector) at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy. Dissertation title: “Software platform for the design and the strategic planning of distribution and logistics networks”, Advisor: Prof. Riccardo Manzini, Co-Advisors: Prof. Alberto Regattieri, Dr. Filippo Bindi.

In July 2009, he enabled to the Profession of Engineer by passing the Italian Practice Exam for the Industrial sector within the First Session 2009 at the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy.

In January 2011 he was Visiting Scholar at the Renewable & Appropriate Energy Laboratory (RAEL) of the University of California, Berkeley (CA), supervised by the RAEL founding director Prof. Daniel M. Kammen. He focused on analysis of the current energy scenario, the study and development of optimal approaches, models and tools for the long-term design of dynamic energy grids in developed and developing countries.

In March 2013 received the Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering - Mechatronics and Industrial Systems Curriculum at the University of Padova, Italy. Ph.D. dissertation title: “Design, control and management of renewable energy plants and technologies” Advisor: Prof. Emilio Ferrari, final score: excellent.

 

Academic Position

Since October 2021, Marco BORTOLINI is Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering of Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna, Italy, within the ING-IND/17 scientific sector (Industrial Systems Engineering).

His Research activities deals, mainly, with design and development of advanced multi-objective models and tools to support the design of flexible production plants, 4.0 assembly systems and integrated supply chain networks.

 

Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN)

In December 2023, he obtained the national habilitation to be Full Professor for the Sector 09/B2, Industrial and Mechanical Plants, (SSD ING-IND/17) passing the Scientific Habilitation Concourse (Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale ASN)

Research Topics

The scientific and research activity takes place within the topics of the ING-IND/17 scientific sector (Industrial Systems Engineering), nationally defined, and deals with studies about the design, development and management of industrial systems.

Particularly, the research topics of specific interest include:

  • design and management of industrial, mechanical and auxiliary plants.
  • design, optimization and simulation of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS).
  • Industry 4.0, enabling technologies and their impact on production systems.
  • Supply Chain Management and Green Supply Chain Management.
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC).
  • supply Chain optimization: location/allocation problems, strategic, tactical and operative planning of direct and reverse logistics networks.
  • management and planning of production systems, manufacturing and assembly cells, through advanced optimization models and algorithms.
  • design of non-traditional storage systems.
  • design, balancing and simulation of assembly systems.
  • innovative approaches, methods and models to spread the penetration of the renewables.
  • feasibility study, development and field-test of prototypal plants based on low carbon sources, including hybrid systems (renewables + backup).
