Massimiliano De Agostinis

Associate Professor

Department of Industrial Engineering

Academic discipline: ING-IND/14 Mechanical Design and Machine Construction

Curriculum vitae

Associate professor at the University of Bologna since 2022, he carries out his research in the field of mechanical design and machine construction.

Main research interests

Joining technologies, in particular: threaded joints, adhesive, friction and hybrid joints.
The research concerned the experimental characterization, numerical modeling and design of joints for application in the automotive, earthmoving and industrial sectors.

Design for additive manufacturing, in particular: static and fatigue characterization of specimens obtained by 3D printing, both plastic and metallic. Re-design of components for additive manufacturing, e.g. by means of topology optimization.

Failure analysis and structural optimization, in particular: Finite Element Analysis supported by experimental stress analysis for the determination of the root-cause of failure in mechanical structures and machine parts, redesign of components and machine groups aiming at reducing weight, cost and/or increasing performance.

Education

Graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 2007 at the University of Bologna, he earned a PhD in Design and Development of Industrial Products and Processes at the University of Florence in 2013.

Academic career

After an initial period in the industry and a few years as a post-doc research fellow (from 2013 to 2016), in March 2016 he became a Junior fixed-term assistant professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Bologna. In 2019, he was appointed Senior fixed-term assistant professor at the same institution.

In 2017 he obtained the national scientific qualification for the functions of associate professor and, in 2018, full professor, in the scientific sector 09/A3 Industrial Design, Mechanical Construction and Metallurgy.

Teaching activity

Since 2011 he has been teaching courses in the field of Machine Design, first as an adjunct professor with responsibility for individual teaching modules, then (2016) as a responsible of full-courses.

Currently, he is in charge of the following teachings:

- Mechanical Behavior of Materials T (Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering)
- Chassis & Body Design and Manufacturing (Master's Degree in Advanced Automotive Engineering)

Scientific activity

He carries out his research activity in the Machine Design Group of the University of Bologna.
He took part in research projects at regional, national and European level.

He has been scientific coordinator in several consultancy contracts stipulated between the University of Bologna and industrial companies.

He served as a tutor for several research fellows, as a co-tutor of a PhD student and is currently tutor of two PhD students.

Institutional activities and academic positions

Since 2009 he has been an adjunct expert member of the examining commission for the qualification to the register of professional engineers, at the University of Bologna.

Since 2018 he has been a member of the teaching staff of the PhD course in Mechatronic Engineering and Mechanical Product Innovation, organized by the University of Padua.

In the three-year period 2018-2021 he was in charge for the third mission activities (i.e. public engagement initiatives and industrial collaborations) of the Department of Industrial Engineering.

Since 2021, he has been in charge for the communication activities of the Department of Industrial Engineering.

In 2022 he has been appointed head of the operating unit (UO3 - Advanced materials for design and photonic applications) of CIRI MAM, Interdepartmental Center for Research, Advanced Mechanics and Materials of the University of Bologna

Membership in scientific and editorial committees

Since 2017 he has been a member of the editorial board and, since 2019, Associate Editor, of the journal: Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers - Part C, Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science.

Since 2018 he is a member of the ASME PVP Computer Technology and Bolted Joints technical committee.

In the years 2021-2022 he was a GEV member (i.e. expert evaluator) for the scientific area 09, SSD ING-IND/14 for carrying out the evaluation activities in the context of the 2015-2019 VQR (Italian evaluation of research quality).

He served as a reviewer of doctoral theses and has been an expert evaluator in the context of H2020 projects.

Other activities

Chartered engineer since 2008, sect. A (Civil and environmental, Industrial, Information).

Since 2010 he has been a technical consultant (also in court) for several companies.

He served as a technical consultant for the Public Prosecutor's Office.
