Curriculum vitae

Luca Tomesani is full professorof Mechanical Technology and manufacturing Systems at the Department of Industrial Engineering (DIN) of the University of Bologna

From 2013 to 2018 he was chief director of CIRI MAM, Interdipartimental Centre of Industrial Research on Advanced Mechanics and Materials, of the University of Bologna (http://www.mam.unibo.it)

Member of the Directive Board of Clust-ER Mech, private association between industrial companies, and research centers for the development of innovation, promoted by Emilia Romagna Region. (https://mech.clust-er.it)

President of strategic committee of BI-REX, “Big Data Innovation and Research Excellence”, national Competence Center of Industry 4.0 in Bologna (www.bi-rex.it)

Scientific Reference of the Democase “Hybrid Materials Components in Automotive” of the 3DP Pilot at the Vanguard Initiative, promoted by the European Commission and by the Emilia Romagna Region. (https://www.s3vanguardinitiative.eu)

Founding member of Nextema, spinoff company of the University of Bologna. Nextema develops manufacturing systems in the field of laser processing, 3DP printing of metals and Engineering solutions.

Representative of University of Bologna by the National Cluster “Fabbrica Intelligente” (https://www.fabbricaintelligente.it)

Since 2001 Luca Tomesani holds fundamental courses for the Degree in Engineering and two not obligatory courses for others Engineering Degrees. He is also member of the local School of Doctorate, being tutor of several Ph doctoral thesis.

At the University of Bologna Luca Tomesani coordinates the research in the fields of metal forming (in particular the extrusion of light alloys) and casting technologies (in particular the numerical simulation of casting processes and the evaluation of boundary heat transfer coefficients).

His particular commitment to industrial research has lead Luca Tomesani to cultivate deep links with local industries. Actually, most of his ongoing projects are funded by private companies, among which Ferrari SpA and Ducati SpA. In particular, some years ago, he played a role in developing the casting technology for the Ferrari F1 engine head.

Since 2007 Luca Tomesani is organizer and head of the scientific committee of the international conference "Latest Advances in Extrusion Technology, Simulation and Extrusion Benchmark", that is held every two years in Italy and Germany.

He is a member of the Italian Association of Mechanical Technology (AITEM), the Italian Association of Metallurgy (AIM) and The Minerals Society (TMS). By the Italian Association of Mechanical Technology, Luca Tomesani leads the national board on extrusion.

He is author of a number of scientific publications and chief editor of International Conference Proceedings on advanced manufacturing.
