Associate Professor of Political Science at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Bologna, since 2021, his research focuses on the functioning and transformation of representative institutions in contemporary democracies. His research interests include, in particular, coalition governments, parliamentary behaviour, political parties, electoral competition, and comparative political institutions. He combines comparative institutional analysis with quantitative and computational methods. More recently, he has developed a line of research on the digitalisation of representative institutions, with particular attention to the use of digital and AI-based tools in parliaments and political organisations.
Education
He obtained his degree in Political Science in 2004 and his Master's degree in Political Science in 2006 from the University of Milan. In 2010, he received a PhD in Political Studies from the same university, with a dissertation on processes of cooperation among political parties. During his PhD, in 2008, he was a visiting student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Academic Career
From 2011 to 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Bologna. From 2015 to 2017, he conducted research at the Institute of Social and Human Sciences of the Scuola Normale Superiore, where he continued as a Research Assistant in 2018.
In October 2018, he became Assistant Professor at the Department of Political and Social Sciences, University of Bologna. Since 2021, he has been Associate Professor of Political Science at the same Department. In 2023, he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professor.
Teaching
He teaches at the University of Bologna at undergraduate, graduate, and PhD level, in both Italian and English. Since 2018, he has taught Political Science. He has also taught courses in research methodology, quantitative methods, data analysis, text analysis, and the Italian political system.
He supervises undergraduate and PhD theses.
Research Activities
He has participated in several national and international research projects on political parties, representation, parliaments, coalition governments, and political institutions. Since 2023, he has been involved in the PRIN project "IPAD - Italian PArties Digitalization", and from 2022 to 2025 he was head of the University of Bologna research unit within the PRIN project "DEMOPE - Democracy under Pressure".
Between 2012 and 2013, he was a Visiting Scholar at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES), University of Mannheim.
His scientific output includes two monographs and numerous journal articles and book chapters mainly devoted to coalition governments, parliamentary behaviour, political parties and electoral competition, as well as the use of quantitative and computational methods in political analysis.
Institutional and Academic Service
Since 2026, he has been a member of the PhD Board in Political and Social Sciences at the University of Bologna.
Since 2025, he has been a member of the Quality Assurance Committee of the Master's Degree Programme in Politics and Administration. From 2022 to 2025, he was a member of the Joint Student-Faculty Committee of the Department of Political and Social Sciences.
Membership in Scientific Associations
He is a member of the Italian Political Science Association (SISP), the European Political Science Association (EPSA), the International Political Science Association (IPSA), and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
