Leonardo Ciabattini is a Ph.D. student at the University of Bologna in the "Engineering and Information Technology for Structural and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management" (EIT4SEMM) program. He conducts his research within the IoTPrimsLab. His research interests focus on advancing artificial intelligence through Deep Learning and Machine Learning, with a particular focus on deploying intelligent systems across the Edge-Cloud continuum. Currently, his research centers on the use of generative Deep Learning to create Digital Twins, aimed at predictive analytics and the simulation of complex systems.

Education

He graduated in Management and Marketing in 2018 at the University of Bologna (110/110) and obtained a Master in Management (Grande École - Digital Business Major) at HEC Paris in 2021. Since November 2023, he has been enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Engineering and Information Technology for Structural and Environmental Monitoring and Risk Management at the University of Bologna.

Academic Career

From April to October 2025, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Irvine (USA), working on DNN allocation on the Cloud-Edge Continuum using Graph Models and Generative Deep Learning.

Teaching Activity

He carries out teaching support activities as a tutor for several courses at the University of Bologna:

  • Since A.Y. 2025-2026: Tutor for the Context-Aware Systems course.

  • Since A.Y. 2024-2025: Tutor for the Data Analytics course.

  • From A.Y. 2023-2024 and 2024-2025: Tutor for the Data Bases course.

He also serves as a co-supervisor for Bachelor's theses in Information Science for Management.

Scientific Activity

He is a member of the IoTPrimsLab research laboratory, directed by Prof. Marco Di Felice. He has presented his research results at international conferences such as the IEEE International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM) and the IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP). He is the author of publications in scientific journals (including IEEE Access and Pervasive and Mobile Computing) and conference proceedings, covering topics such as audio fingerprinting , Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using federated learning , and structural health monitoring via IoT and AI.

Memberships

He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Other Activities

He has significant experience in the entrepreneurial and corporate sectors. He is the co-founder of several startups, including Archeion SRL (web development and business intelligence) and AnyPrint SRL. He has gained international professional experience at ING Bank (Amsterdam) in the Distributed Ledger Technology team and at Amazon EU (Luxembourg) as a Programme Manager and BI Specialist.
