His research activity started in 1980. He worked in projects sponsored by several organizations, such as the Italian Agricultural Ministry (projects PANDA on sustainable agriculture and PRISCA on industrial crops), the Italian Ministry of Education (ex 60% on weed control and N fertilisation) and Emilia Romagna Region (N fertilizers and sewage sludge). He had the coordination of an inter-university project (40% MURST) on Vegetable Sustainable Management and of PRIN programmes on CO2 sequestration in tilled soils. He is the responsible of conventions with Bologna “Cassa di Risparmio” Foundation and Hera Ambiente Ltd. Recently his main research activity concerned the recycling of municipal wastes and compost in agricultural soils, N fertilization of cereal crops, soil organic matter dynamics and the prosecution of long lasting (50 years) agronomic field experiments on crop rotation, inorganic and organic fertilisations, and crop residue management. Up to now he published about 95 scientific papers and four books: on cauliflower cultivation, on agricultural ecology, on field crops and on general agronomy
