The main research topics regard the development of innovative analytical experimental approaches for the determination of illicit doping compounds, characterised by high sample stability standards and reliability. The expected results of the research include the comprehensive development and validation of sampling and sample preparation procedures, followed by reliable, high-throughput analytical protocols. The methodologies involve the use of advanced analytical platforms based on mass spectrometry, also coupled to chromatographic separation (LC-MS/MS, UHPLC-MS, UHPLS-HRMS). The research involves the development and optimization of miniaturised sampling approaches (such as dried matrix spot, DMS and volumetric absorptive microsampling, VAMS) mainly applied to blood and urine samples, as matrices of choice in the anti-doping field. The design of such approaches aims to extend the post-sampling detection window, to simplify sample collection and pre-analytical steps and to promote their automation. Target analytes considered for this research include anabolic steroids, diuretics, masking agents and peptide hormones to be analysed by high-throughput, high-reliability screening tests, followed by targeted confirmatory analysys.
