Biographic notes:

Giovanni Emanuele Corazza was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1964.

He received the Dr. Ing. Degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Bologna (Italy) in 1988.

He received the Ph.D. Degree in Telecommunications and Microelectronics Engineering from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy) in 1995, with a dissertation on “Code acquisition in code division multiple access systems”.

During the years 1989 and 1990 he worked at the Canadian aerospace company COM DEV (Ontario), as an Advanced Member of Technical Staff, in the microwave and millimeter wave communication systems department.

From 1991 to 1998 he worked inside the Department of Electronic Engineering at the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” as a Researcher.

During 1995 he was a Research Fellow for a four months period at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC - Noordwijk, The Netherlands) of the European Space Agency (ESA), on a fellowship granted by the European Community.

During the summer of 1996 he was a Visiting Scientist at Communications Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA).

Since 1998 he is with the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems of the University of Bologna, now Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering (DEI) as a Full Professor.

In the period 2009-2012 he was the Head of the Department of Electronics, Computer Science, and Systems (DEIS).

He is a Member of the Executive Board of the Alma Mater Studiorum University of Bologna (2012-2015).

He is President of Cineca Consorzio Interuniversitario (2017-2019)

He founded and chairs the Marconi Institute for Creativity (MIC), 2011.

During 1999 he was a Principal Engineer at Qualcomm (San Diego, California, U.S.A.).

In the Fall semester of the year 2000, he was invited as a Visiting Professor to teach a course on “Spread Spectrum Systems” at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, California).

He received the Marconi International Fellowship Young Scientist Award  in 1995.

 

Coordination of industrial research within the European Community:

·         Chairman of the Advanced Satellite Mobile Systems Task Force (ASMS-TF) in the years 2003-2006.

·         Founder and Chairman of the Integral Satcom Initiative (ISI) in the years 2005-2007, the European Technology Platform for satellite communications (www.isi-initiative.eu.org).

 

Scientific Research

·         Areas of research: creativity studies, mobile communications, satellite communications, navigation and positioning systems, communication theory, spread spectrum and CDMA techniques, synchronization and estimation techniques, multi-carrier techniques.

·         More than 300 scientific contributions on refereed International Journals and Conferences.

·         International Awards:

o        Marconi International Fellowship Young Scientist Award (1995).

o        IEEE VTS Best System Paper Award, “Wide-Band CDMA for the UMTS/IMT-2000 Satellite Component”, IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technologies, March 2002.

o        IEEE ISSSTA'98 Best Paper Award, Sun City (South Africa) Sept 2-4, 1998

o        IEEE ISSSTA'04 Best Student Paper Award, settembre 2004.

o        IEEE IWSSC'05 Best Paper Award, Siena, Sep.5-9, 2005

·         Editor of 1 book and Author of  10 chapters in international books.

·         US Patent on “Closed Loop Resource Allocation”, 2003. Two patent requests deposited in 2006 and 2008.

·         General Chairman of International Conferences: IEEE ISSSTA 2008 (Bologna), ASMS 2008 (Bologna), ASMS 2006 (Herrsching), ASMS 2004 (Noordwijk).

·         Member of the Technical Programme Committee and/or Session Chairman in several Iinternational Conferences.

·         Reviewer for International scientific journals and conferences.

Academic activities:

·         Co-Founder of the ARCES Center of Excellence on “Electronic Systems for ICT, inside the University of Bologna.

·         Chairman of the School of Telecommunications inside the University of Bologna, from 2000 to 2003.

·         Member of the Executive Board of the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems (DEIS), since the year 2000.

·         Member of the Doctoral School Board inside the DEIS Department.
