Curriculum vitae

Gioia Fusaro is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Bologna, she conducts her research in the area of acoustic metamaterial design with an approach focused on ergonomics and sustainability by exploiting various verification methodologies that include quantitative and qualitative methods (see multiphysics, psychoacoustic methods, questionnaires and focus groups). Gioia Fusaro is an expert in multiphysics FEM simulations related to the areas of acoustics and fluid dynamics. She currently holds the position of Didactic Tutor of the Vehicle Acoustics course for the Mechanical Engineering Master's degree at the Bologna campus. Following his single-cycle master's degree from the University of Perugia in 2016 (106/110), he obtained his PhD in 2022 with a thesis on the development of a system for natural ventilation and sound insulation through the use of metamaterial techniques at the University of Sheffield (UK) and in collaboration with the A*STAR Institute (SG) where he carried out two years of PhD research. He has various collaborations with international research and design organizations under his belt, including the Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) in Singapore and APEX Acoustics (UK). Currently, his main research interests are:

  • Implementation of numerical FEM models in multi-physics domains (Acoustics-Fluid Dynamics-Thermal Transmission);
  • Insight into the impact of new metamaterial-based systems on the end user;
  • Insight into international regulations and standards on acoustic insulation of façade elements (closed or open);
  • Sustainability of metamaterials and metamaterial manufacturing processes;

Winner of the "Sacerdote Prize" for the best doctoral dissertation in Acoustics 2022 by the Italian Acoustics Association (AIA) has published the results of her research in several national and international peer-reviewed journals. A member of the Italian Acoustics Association (AIA), the European Acoustical Association (EAA), the Young Acousticians Network (YAN), and the Young Researcher in Acoustic Metamaterials (YRAM), she has been a moderator at various national and international conferences in the field of "Acoustic Metamaterials" including at the International Inter-Noise Congress held in Chiba, Japan in 2023 and an organizer of various events for early career researchers including the "Acoustic Metamaterials Summer School" in Turin, Italy in 2023. Registered as a Technician Competent in Acoustics (TCA), she is licensed as an Engineer (ITA), as an Architect, Planner, Landscape Architect, Conservator (ITA), and as a Teacher and/or Learning Support in Higher Education (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK). Gioia Fusaro is the inventor of the patent "Improved locking apparatus for a door or window compartment" filed through the University of Bologna.
