Gian Marco Caletti is Senior Researcher (RTT) and Lecturer in Criminal Law at the Department of Legal Sciences of the University of Bologna. He graduated with honours from the same university in 2012 and then obtained his PhD in Legal Sciences in 2018 (XXX cycle, curriculum in criminal law), discussing a thesis on criminal law entitled "Il grado di colpa punibile. Un’indagine comparata con i sistemi anglosassoni" (The degree of criminal negligence. A comparative study with Anglo- American systems) (tutor Prof. Stefano Canestrari).

From January 2019 to December 2022, he was a research fellow at the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, working on the international and interdisciplinary research project CREEP: “Trust me: it's only for me! Criminalising Revenge Porn?”.

Over the years, he has focused his research on comparisons with Anglo-American legal systems (he is the author of the entry “Recklessness” in the Encyclopaedia of Law), spending periods of research at the Universities of Cambridge (UK, 2016), New York-NYU ( US, 2019) and Durham (UK, 2023).

He is the author of publications in scientific journals and anthologies, including in English, as well as the monographs: Dalla violenza al consenso nei delitti sessuali. Profili storici, comparati e di diritto vivente (BUP 2024); Habeas corpus digitale. Lo statuto penale dell’immagine corporea tra privatezza e riservatezza (Giappichelli, 2024).

Together with Prof. Kolis Summerer, he edited a collection of essays for Oxford University Press entitled Criminalizing Intimate Image Abuse. A Comparative Perspective (2024). In 2017, he authored an interdisciplinary volume on the topic of medical guidelines (G.M. Caletti, I. Cavicchi, C. Scorretti, P. Ziviz, Responsabilità e linee guida. Riflessioni sull’uso delle linee guida nella valutazione della colpa dei sanitari, EPG Edizioni, 2017).

One of the first Italian scholars to investigate abuse through the dissemination of private images online, he has been repeatedly interviewed by national institutions, including during parliamentary hearings on the introduction of the offence referred to in Article 612-ter of the Italian Criminal Code.

He has been invited as a speaker at numerous conferences and seminars, including at foreign universities (Vigo, Ourense, Leipzig, Oxford, Durham, Cologne, Sacramento, Berlin), and has lectured on several occasions at the Scuola Superiore della Magistratura. He is on the editorial board of several Italian scientific journals, including Indice Penale e Penale. Diritto e procedura.

In June 2023, he obtained the National Scientific Habilitation to serve as Associate Professor of Criminal Law (ASN 2021, fifth round).

Since 2024, he has been involved in the research project funded by Alphabet Google, Trust and Safety department, entitled CliC – Leveling the field: Clarifying the notion of illegal content under the EU’s Digital Service Act, based at the Free University of Bolzano and the University of Bologna.

He enrolled in the Bologna Bar Association (trainee section) in November 2012, then in the ordinary section on 24 February 2016, and practised as a lawyer in Bologna until 31 December 2024, when he resigned from the Bar.
