Professional records

Franco Callegati started his research career in 1988 at Italtel SIT (Castelletto Milanese) in the Reti Speciali Innovative (Avanced networking) division, where he took part in the implementation of field trials for audio/video conference applications during the preparation of his Master thesis. He graduated in Electronic Engineering in 1989 cum laude.

In 1990 he joined the Ph.D. program in Electronics and Informatics at the Department of Electronics, Computer Science and Systems (D.E.I.S.) with Prof. Giorgio Corazza as supervisor and subject "Traffic Control in ATM Network".

In 1993 he was research fellow at the Teletraffic Research Centre of the University of Adelaide (Australia), where he worked on congestion control and prevention in multiservice networks.

In 1994 he obtained a grant from the U. Bordoni Foundation to work on admission control in multiservice cellular networks.

In 1995 he was enrolled as Assistant Professor of Telecommunications at the University of Bologna.
He moved his research activities towards the early born topic of optical networking, which has been his main research topic so far. From 1995 to 1998 he actively participated in the research project KEOPS (KEys to Optical Packet Switching), funded by the European Union (EU). This was a pioneering project in the area of optical packet switching. Franco Callegati contributed actively to the network architecture definition and analysis and was given his first coordination task, leading the activity on "Optical Traffic Models". He was also invited to participate in the final project reviews.

In 1998 he was invited as visiting scholar at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) were he collaborated with the research groups of Prof. Lakshman Tamil at UTD and of Dr. Francesco MasettiPlacci at Alcatel Corporate Research Center in Richardson, working on performance analysis of optical burst switched networks.

In 2001 he was enrolled as Associate Professor. From October 1st, 2002 he joined the Second Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna at the Cesena offsite campus, where he served until October 2012 when the Faculty was closed as a result of the governance reform of the University of Bologna. He is now a member of the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering "G. Marconi" (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Energia Elettrica e dell'Informazione "G. Marconi").

From 2004 to 2010 Franco Callegati led the research unit of the University of Bologna in the ePhoton/OneBONE network of excellence, an international collaboration project on optical networking which spanned over three different funding periods. Franco Callegati led and coordinated the Virtual Center of Excellence on "Network technologies and Engineering", to which contributed 150 researchers from 40 research institutions. He participated into all the projects technical reviews as Workpackage leader, contributed to and coordinated the writing of summary manuscripts about the results of the work and presented them in several invited talks at conferences.

From 2011 Franco Callegati moved his research interest more towards the broader topic of advanced Future Internet technologies, in particular autonomic networking, Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization, Cyber Physical Systems as well as the impact of these advances of networks on society. He led the research unit of the University of Bologna in the EU funded EINS project, a network of excellence aiming at assessing the importance of studying the Internet from a multifacet and multidisciplinary perspective.

In the summer of 2011, 2012 and 2013 he collaborated with the research groups of Prof. Mario Gerla and Prof. Giovanni Pau at the University of California in Los Angeles as visiting scholar, where he performed some research on vehicular networking.

During this period Franco Callegati was also involved in activities to enhance the technology transfer and strengthen the collaboration with industry. Since 2011 he lead a research unit of the Center for Industrial Research on Information and Communication Technologies (CIRI ICT) at the University of Bologna and since 2013 he acts as Director of the Center. During this period he represented the University of Bologna in the EIT Digital Italian Node Steering Committee and led the Unibo research unit in the H2020 project European Network of competencies and platforms for Enabling SME from any sector building Innovative CPS products to sustain demand for European manufacturing (EuroCPS) devoted to develop collaborative project with SMEs.
