SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

Since the beginning of her research activity in the endocrinological analytical chemistry field in 2007, Dr. Flaminia Fanelli developed considerable skills in the development and validation, both at analytical and clinical level, of quantitative assays based on liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Her researches were carried out at the Center for Applied Biomedical Research, the major lab of the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences – University of Bologna, where she is in charge of the mass spectrometry facility. Her main fields of interest are steroid hormones, the lipid mediators of the endocannabinoid system and targeted metabolomics, investigated in several biologic fluid such as blood derivatives, saliva, faeces and cell cultures. Dr. Fanelli focused on the development of sex and age specific reference intervals for steroid hormones and endocannabinoids and on major metabolic parameters impacting over them.

She applied her analytical expertise to the study of several endocrine diseases such as female hyperandrogenism, male hypogonadism, adrenal adenomas, 21-hydroxylase deficits, obesity and metabolic syndrome in humans, and contributes to studies involving animal models and cell cultures in collaboration with national and international research groups.

As leader of the analytical division of the Endocrinology Unit, she’s been contributing to conception and management of several analytical and clinical studies funded by non-for-profit foundations (Fondazione Centro Studi sulla Calvizie Cesare Ragazzi Laboratories, 2007; Fondazione del Monte, 2015); by national public grants (Emilia Romagna Region – University Progam, PRUa1a-2007-006; Progetti di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale 2010, g.a. PRIN 2010C8ERKX; PRIN 2017HRTZYA; PRIN 2017ATZ2YK; PRIN 2020ERLB52) as well as by EU grants (REPROBESITY, g.a. FPVII-HEALTH-223713; MEDIGENE, g.a. FPVII-HEALTH-279171; NEUROfast, g.a. n° KBBE-2009-3-245009; MyNewGut FPVII-613979 g.a. n°613979; SPIOMETH4HEALTH g.a. n°899671), developing relevant skills in team organization and multidisciplinary collaborations.

In 2012, Dr. Fanelli was granted by the Programma Regione Emilia Romagna – Università, “Alessandro Liberati” Young Investigator Awards (n°1-2012-004) for the study “Development and validation of innovative methods for steroid hormone measurement in serum and saliva: applicability of new technologies in the clinical routine”.

Dr. Fanelli is one of the major experts in steroid hormone measurements. She conceived and currently leads an international LC-MS/MS harmonization study (HarmoSter study, approved by local ethic committee with protocol number 141/2017/U/Tess; DOI: 10.1515/cclm-2021-1028).

She has several Italian and International collaborations and is part of the Scientific Comittee of the MS Advancement in Clinical Lab.
