Materialism was for centuries the accursed current of philosophy, a lucid analysis of nature intended to free humans from fear and superstition. Instead, it was regarded by many philosophers as the worst enemy, the ignoble source of atheism and the subversion of all values, human and divine. Materialism, however, has survived, dispersing in a thousand rivulets and re-emerging from time to time alongside powerful allies such as atomism, the critical philology of the Renaissance, the scientific mechanism of early modernity, Marxism and quantum mechanics. Materialisms must therefore be spoken of in the plural, to highlight the multiform richness of a current that has managed to dig trenches and form alliances, becoming an extraordinary tool in the fight against superstition and ignorance. This series includes studies and proposals that promote a materialist reading of philosophy, culture and their history. It includes both classical texts, with new translations and editions enriched with original apparatuses, and unpublished texts, especially by scholars who are in dialogue with those classics, in order to continuously renew the materialist tradition of philosophy. The aim is to promote a realistic view of nature, the world and society, at the crossroads of humanistic and scientific knowledge, for a critique of the present and a new season of research beyond the existing order.
