The scientific activity of Ferruccio Doghieri was mainly devoted to
the study of thermodynamic and transport properties in solid
polymers, aimed to the comprehension and modelling of fundamental
physical phenomena, as well as to the analysis of behaviours of
practical interest in membrane separation processes, barrier film
production and drug release. Among the specific topic examined are:
study of combined effect of mass and momentum transport in solid
polymers, analysis of gases and vapours solubility in glassy
polymers. Among the most interesting results are: a predictive
model for solubility of low molecular weight species in glassy
polymers based on pure component PVT properties, correlation
procedure for the diffusivity in glassy polymer based on the
separate analysis of mobility and thermodynamic factors. With
respect to the modelling of non-Fickian mass transport a complete
model was obtained for the description of simultaneous mass flux
and stress development in elastic polymers and several simplified
models based on the use of visoelastic constitutive equations for
the diffusive mass flux density.correlazione per la diffusività di

mobilità e del fattore termodinamico. Per ciò che riguarada la
modellazione del trasporto non-Fickiano sono stati messi a punto un
modello completo per lo studio del simultaneo trasporto di materia
e di quantità di moto in materiali polimerici elastici e alcuni
modelli semplificati basati sull'uso di equazioni per la densità di
flusso di materia di tipo viscoelastico iperbolico.
