Master Thesis Title: Measuring Decoherence between Elementary Particles Produced at the LHC

Requirements:

  • Interest in quantum information theory and particle physics (preferably from an experimental perspective).

  • Basic programming skills (C++ or Python).

Description:
The student will investigate the possibility of measuring, for the first time, decoherence between pairs of top quarks produced in collisions at the LHC. Entanglement between top-quark pairs was first measured in 2023 by the ATLAS experiment. This thesis project aims to deepen the study of quantum correlations among fundamental particles, addressing the question of how radiation affects entanglement—specifically, whether it induces decoherence between the two quarks and if this effect can be measured.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the University of Valencia. For this reason, it would be highly valuable if the student could spend 3 to 6 months in Valencia to complete part of the thesis abroa (con finanziameti dell'Universitá).
