Born in Palermo (Italy) on December 25th 1978.

 

Education and training:

  • July 2003: Graduation in Medicine and Surgery, University of Bologna; level achieved: 110/110, with honours. Final discussion: “Molecular and Immunological therapy of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia: Imatinib Mesylate and alpha-Interferon”.

    Certificate of Experience at the University of Bologna, on 1st Session 2004.

  • November 2003 – October 2007: Training Program (Fellowship/Residency) in Hematology, University of Bologna; level achieved: 70/70, with honours. Final discussion on November 2007: “Deletions of the derivative chromosome 9 do not influence influence the response of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in early chronic phase treated with imatinib mesylate”.
  • January 2008 – December 2010: Ph D in "Biomedical Sciences", Project "Clinical-Experimental Hematology and Hematopathology", University of Bologna. Final discussion on May 2011: “Nilotinib as frontline treatment of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia".
  • Frequency of the course "Application of statistical methodology to clinical questions" (176 hours), University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. Level achieved: 110/110, with honours.
  • From 03/12/2013 achievement of the National Scientific Abilitation as Associate Professor (Level II) in Hematology and Oncology.
  • From 28/03/2018 achievement of the National Scientific Abilitation as Full Professor (Level I) in Hematology and Oncology.

Work experience:

  • January 2011 – April 2012: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, University of Bologna. Research Project: “Second Generation Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in early chronic phase Chronic Myeloid Leukemia”.
  • April 2012 – April 2017: Researcher (RTD-A according to L.240/2010, equivalent to Assistant Professor) in Hematology, University of Bologna. Research Project: “National and International Coordination of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Studies”. From 01/08/2013 contract with the National Health System.
  • April 2017 – April 2018: Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, University of Bologna. Research Project: “Optimization of second-line therapy in chronic myeloid leukemia”.
  • July 2017 – May 2018: Independent Contracting Physician, “S. Orsola-Malpighi” University Hospital, Bologna. Clinical Project: “Improvement of stem cell transplantation activity and implementation of clinical studies”.

Current position:

From May 2018 to present time: Researcher (RTD-B according to L.240/2010, equivalent to Assistant Professor) in Hematology, University of Bologna. Research Project: “New therapeutic options in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia patients resistant to or intolerant of first-line treatment”. Contract with the National Health System.

 Scientific activity:

Main scientific interest: Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML).

Research fields: safety and efficacy of tyrosine kinase inhibitors; new drugs; prognostic factors and biomarkers; mechanisms of resistance; characterization of the BCR-ABL+ leukemic stem cell; biostatistics.

Author or co-author of 124 scientific papers indexed in the Current Contents (H-index: 34), 6 book chapters, > 350 abstracts at national and international congresses.

Principal investigator or co-investigator in several phase I, II, III and observational clinical trials concerning CML, conducted according to ICH-GCP guidelines.

Active involvement in granted research projects (PRIN, FIRB, AIL, AIRC)

Since 2004, active member of the GIMEMA (Gruppo Italiano Malattie EMatologiche dell’Adulto) CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia) WP (Working Party); member of the Writing Committee of many GIMEMA CML WP clinical studies.

Since 2008, active member of the “European Investigators on CML” Group.

Involvement in the EUTOS Project, within the frame of the European LeukemiaNet.

Since 2014, National Coordinator of LabNet Educational Board.

Since 2017, elected member of the National Board of the GIMEMA CML WP.

Member of: American Society of Hematology (ASH), European Hematology Association (EHA), Italian Society of Hematology (SIE), Italian Society of Experimental Hematology (SIES).
