RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Research activities are carried out in the field of aerospace engineering, with particular focus on innovative propulsion systems, multiphysics numerical modelling, and technologies supporting the sustainability of future space and energy applications.

The main research topics concern electric space propulsion, with emphasis on the development of advanced propulsion systems for small satellites and sustainable space missions. In this context, particular attention is devoted to alternative propellants (iodine, water, oxygen), plasma-based technologies, and innovative propulsion concepts for low-Earth orbit applications and in-space resource utilization.

Another major research area involves Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and the numerical simulation of complex thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena applied to aerospace systems. Research activities include the study of rocket engines, aerospike nozzles, compressible and multiphase flows, as well as the modelling of propulsion systems through advanced multi-scale and multi-physics numerical approaches.

Research activities also include the development of high-efficiency energy systems, with particular reference to micro gas turbines, fuel cell systems, advanced heat exchangers, and components manufactured through Additive Manufacturing techniques and innovative ceramic materials.

The research approach integrates physical modelling, numerical simulation, experimental activities, and interdisciplinary collaboration, with the aim of developing innovative and sustainable technologies for aerospace and advanced energy systems.
