Born in Bologna on September 14, 1972. Married.
Since 2002, he has been affiliated with the Department of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari”.
His scientific disciplinary sector is CHEM-01/B (formerly Chim/12), Chemistry for the Environmental and for Cultural Heritage.
Since September 20, 2021, he has been a Full Professor at the Department of Industrial Chemistry “Toso Montanari”, University of Bologna, where he currently serves as Deputy Director for the term 2024–2027.
From September 15, 2014 to September 19, 2021 he was Associate Professor at the same Department.
From June 11, 2018 to June 10, 2021 he served as Director of the Interdepartmental Center for Industrial Research “Renewable Resources, Environment, Sea and Energy” (formerly “Energy & Environment”) at the University of Bologna.
From September 10, 2013 to May 9, 2018, he was Vice-Director of the Interdepartmental Center for Industrial Research “Energy & Environment” of the University of Bologna, established within the framework of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) 2007–2013 programme in collaboration with the Emilia-Romagna Region for the development of regional technopoles.
From September 15, 2010 to September 9, 2013, he was coordinator of the Working Unit “Industrial Ecodesign, waste recovery and product life cycle” of the same center.
From 2019 to 2021, he served as Vice-President of the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry Division of Italian Chemical Society, of which he was President in the triennium 2013-2015.
Since 2014 he has been a member of the Technical-Scientific Committee of “Ecomondo. The Green Technology Expo”

Education and early career
He graduated with honors in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Bologna in 1996; from 1996 to 1999 he worked at the University “Ca’ Foscari” of Venice and obtained a PhD in Chemistry in 2000. He is qualified to practice as a member of the Professional Register of Chemists and Physicists.
His early scientific activity was carried out within the Department of Industrial Chemistry and Materials, focusing on integrated environmental monitoring through research collaborations and a post-doctoral position.
From October 1, 2002 (confirmed in 2005) to September 14, 2014, he served as Assistant Professor in Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry at the Faculty of Industrial Chemistry of the University of Bologna (Rimini Campus).

These courses have been delivered within Bachelor’s degree programmes in Industrial Chemistry (Bologna), Chemistry of Materials and Ceramic Technologies (Ravenna), and Chemical Technologies for the Environment and Waste Management (Rimini), as well as within Master’s degree programmes in Products, Materials and Processes of Industrial Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Low Carbon Technologies and Sustainable Chemistry, Teaching and Communication of Natural Sciences (Bologna), and Resource Economics and Sustainable Development (Rimini). They have also been taught within the Erasmus Mundus MSc “CHIR – Chemical Innovation and Regulation” and within professional Master programmes, including “Environmental Technologies and Certification”, “MACOF – Master in Composite Materials”, and “MaBioMed – Materials and Processes in the Production of Devices for the Health Sector”.

He co-directed, together with Prof. Luciano Morselli, two International Summer Schools in Rimini:

He was the coordinator of an “Erasmus Intensive Programme” funded by EU within the “Lifelong Learning Programme”, entitled: “Strategies, Applications and Methodologies of WAste REcovery”, involving students and teachers of 7 European Universities: Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna; University of Modena and Reggio Emilia; Braunschweig Institute of Technology (Germany); Rey Juan Carlos University (Spain); Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium); Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (Austria); University “Dunarea de Jos” of Galati (Romania). First edition: 2nd October – 7th November 2008. Second edition: 19-30 October 2009.
From July 7, 2017 to June 30, 2018 appointed as Expert for European Commission Joint Research Center. Topic of the research: Development of Raw Material System Analysis Studies for Aluminium (Al), Copper (Cu), and Iron (Fe) for the EU-28. Scientific activity and professional roles
From 2006 to 2021 he was a member of the Executive Board of the Environmental and Cultural Heritage Chemistry Division of Italian Chemical Society. He is also member of SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) and of ACS (American Chemical Society).
He serves as reviewer for national research projects of the Italian Ministry of University and Research and for approximately 30 international journals in the field of environmental chemistry and engineering.
