Research Activity
My research focuses on integrating animal welfare, veterinary ethics, product quality and sustainability to support responsible livestock production and evidence-based decision-making. Through an interdisciplinary approach, I develop and apply tools for animal welfare assessment, investigate how livestock management practices affect the quality of animal-derived products and the sustainability of production systems, and explore how scientific evidence can support veterinary practice and public policy.
My main research areas include:
- Animal welfare assessment, with particular emphasis on the development and validation of animal-based indicators, non-invasive assessment methods and approaches to positive animal welfare.
- Sustainable livestock systems, investigating the relationships between farm management, animal welfare, product quality and environmental sustainability.
- Quality of animal-derived products, with particular emphasis on the relationships between animal welfare, livestock management, meat and processed product quality, and consumer perception.
- Veterinary ethics and decision-making, with a focus on ethical dilemmas in veterinary medicine and the integration of scientific evidence into professional and policy decision-making.
- Consumer perception and product quality, including research on public perceptions of livestock production systems, animal-friendly products and the relationship between animal welfare and product quality.
- Precision livestock farming and innovative technologies, aimed at improving animal welfare assessment and supporting sustainable livestock systems, including applications of Animal-Computer Interaction and Animal-Centred Design.
- Innovation in veterinary education, with particular emphasis on active learning, ethical reasoning and the development of professional competences.
My research is carried out through collaborations with universities, research centres and public institutions at both national and international level, contributing to competitive research projects, scientific working groups and consultancy activities that facilitate the translation of scientific evidence into veterinary practice, livestock production and European policies.
