Art in the House of Princes: the Caetani in Rome - Lecture by Prof. Giovanna Sapori, University of Rome 3, organized by prof.ssa Donatella Biagi Maino, Wednesday 7 May, 5 pm, Aula Magna of Santa Cristina

The volume Fondazione Camillo Caetani. Paintings, sculptures, drawings, edited by G. Sapori and D.K. Marignoli (Rome 2024), is the first catalogue of the Caetani collection, preserved in Rome in the building on Via delle Botteghe Oscure. On this occasion, the curator presents it in the context of the events in the history of the ancient Caetani family as patrons and collectors in Rome and in the vast fiefdoms of Lazio.

It highlights two distinct origins of the collection. The first is identified with the surviving works of the purchases made over the centuries up to the early twentieth century; the second with the actual collecting activity of Marguerite Chapin (1880-1963), wife of Roffredo Caetani.

The peculiar character of the current heritage derives from these two different origins. It is a composite character that distinguishes even the most ancient works: isolated paintings from various periods coexist with groups of a unitary nature such as the rich anthology of the ‘house painter’ Antonio Cavallucci. And for the twentieth century, among the survivors of the extraordinary Italian and international ‘harvest’ of Marguerite Caetani, works by Dérain, Torres Garcia, Cagli, Severini, Congdom.
