Curriculum vitae

During his training at the School of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Perugia, he developed a particular interest in neuroscience, particularly neurosurgery. This interest led him, while still a medical student, to volunteer in the Neurosurgery Department of the Santa Maria Hospital in Terni, then directed by Professor Giulio Maira, starting in 1996. In 1997, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery with honors, defending an experimental thesis entitled "The Surgical Treatment of Microprolactinomas" (Supervisor Professor Giulio Maira).
Over the following years, he focused his work on pituitary surgery and skull base anatomy and surgery. He received his neurosurgical training at the School of Specialization in Neurosurgery at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, first attending the U.O.C. Neurosurgery at the Modena Polyclinic, and from his third year of specialization at the Bellaria Hospital, directed by Prof. Fabio Calbucci. He also actively participated in the practical and research activities of the Pituitary Tumor Surgery Center, directed by Dr. Giorgio Frank.
During his specialist training, thanks to the role of tutor of Dr. Giorgio Frank, he was able to actively participate in the introduction and development of endoscopic techniques applied to pituitary and skull base pathology. He has attended numerous courses in anatomical dissection of the skull base, brain, and vertebrae.
In 2003, he specialized in Neurosurgery with a grade of 110/110 cum laude, with a thesis entitled: "Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery of the Cavernous Sinus" (Supervisor Prof. Gian Antonio Merli, co-supervisors Prof. Fabio Calbucci, Dr. Giorgio Frank). He subsequently continued to work at the U.O.C. of Neurosurgery at Bellaria Hospital, as a Co.Co.Co. until 2005 and then as a First Level Medical Director, dealing with brain and spinal pathologies, both elective and emergency. Over the years, he has been fully involved in the management of multiple pathologies within the neurosurgical remit.
In 2012, he became Head of Pituitary Surgery and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, and since 2015, he has coordinated the multidisciplinary working group as Clinical Director of the "Diagnostic Therapeutic Care Pathway for Patients with Diencephalo-Pituitary and Skull Base Pathways (PDTA)".

Since 2016, he has been an Associate Professor for the MED-27 Specialty Sector at the University of Bologna. Since 2017, he has taught Neurosurgery annually at the School of Medicine and Surgery and at the Specialization Schools in Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neurology, and Psychiatry. He also teaches Neurosurgery annually for the Degree Program in Neurophysiopathology Techniques.

Since 2021, he has been a member of the CTS Scientific Technical Committee; and a member of the Scientific Board of the Biobank of the Institute of Neurosciences of Bologna and a member of the Teaching Staff of the Doctorate in Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences at the Department of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences, University of Bologna.

He has currently participated in over 180 national and international courses and conferences, has served on the faculty of over 60 international and nationally renowned courses, and is the author of numerous peer-reviewed research papers and 15 contributions to books or editorial series. He has participated in over 20 research groups, including those under the aegis of scientific societies, also playing a coordinating role. He has spoken at 31 medical and surgical degree programs and 6 neurosurgery specialization programs.
He has an H-Index of 30, with 3,192 citations (Scopus 28.02.2025).
