Attitude to self-loosening of screws due to vibrations
Define guidelines to avoid/reduce vibration related to loosening
Mainly EXPERIMENTAL activity
- identify an experimental test to evaluate the aptitude to the self-loosening
- evaluate the influence of untightening for:
1 geometry of the connection (screw length, screw stiffness, type of washer ...)
3 different preload levels with the same geometry
3 possible screw coatings (lubrication, phosphating, ...)
- identify possible countermeasures and define improvements
Head cover tightening
EXPERIMENTAL part
- Identify the best torque + angle tightening strategy to minimize tightening dispersion
- Measurement of the experimental pre-load:
1 Direct measurement with strain gauges
2 Indirect measurement using the stiffness / elongation relationship
3 Validation of the indirect measure
NUMERICAL part:
- how to define the stiffness of the connection (screw and plates) numerically
- define a numerical / analytical model for estimating the initial load knowing experimental frictions
Timing cover tightening
Define better tightening strategy to minimize assembly dispersion on a large timing cover
- influence of the pattern / tightening order on the residual torques
- influence of the sealing paste on the tightening
- identify the best tightening pattern (cross, clockwise, second closing turn, ..)
Proactive approach to process checks on tightening
Work program and macro issues to be addressed:
1. Knowledge and in-depth study of the tightening strategies used on production cars
2. Benchmark and comparison on technical solutions of bolted joints both in terms of product and in terms of process
3. Deepening of the D - FMEA and examples of reverse engineering on tightening
4. Proposals for improvement and feasibility study on technical solutions on tightening both in terms of product and in terms of process
