  • Claudio Borghi is Professor of Medicine at the University of Bologna.
  • He is born in Bologna on January 31, 1955
  • He received his medical degree at the University of Bologna and completed his internship, residency and clinical fellowship at the Department of Cardiology and at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Bologna.
  • He received is certification as specialist in Internal Medicine from the University of Bologna.
  • His research experience is mainly focused on cardiovascular medicine and particularly on the pharmacological and therapeutic aspects of hypertension, coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure.
  • He is currently Chief of the Department of Medicine of the University of Bologna and Head of the Hypertension Unit (included among the Centers of Excellence for the management of hypertension by the ESH), Center for the Atherosclerosis and the Heart Failure Clinic.
  • - He is former director of the post-doc scale of Respiratory Medicine and Current Director of the School of Emergency Medicine.
  • Dr.Borghi is Scientific Coordinator of the post-doc program on Health and Technology
  • Dr.Borghi is current member of the Academic Senate of the University of Bologna
  • Dr Borghi is the Past-Scientific Director of the Italian Society of Hypertension and the Editor-in and Past-President of the Società Medica-Chirurgica di Bologna.
  • He is Editor-in-chief of the "Bullettino delle Scienze Mediche", Journal of the "Società Medica Chirurgica " of Bologna. 
  • Dr.Borghi is member of the Scientific Council of the European Society of Hypertension and International Society of Hypertension
  • Dr.Borghi is in the Editorial Board of several scientific journals (e.g. Journal of Hypertension, Frontiers in Bioscience, Current Drugs, High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Prevention, Cardiology Review, Pharmacoeconomics) and is also in the board of reviewers for the European Heart Journal, British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, American Journal of Hypertension, American Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Circulation, Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology.
  • He has lectured to primary care physicians, cardiologists and internists about hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors, lipid lowering drugs, clinical pharmacology of cardiovascular drugs, drug treatment of CV diseases.
  • He is currently teaching "Clinical Medicine and Therapeutic" and "Emergency Medicine" at the School of Medicine of the University of Bologna and Internal Medicine in 9 post-graduate school of specialization in the same University. Past- Director of the post-graduate School of Specialization in "Respiratory Disease" in the same University and Director of the post-graduate School of Specializatian in "Urgent and Emergecy Medicine". 
  • ·         He is also member of the Board of teachers of the following post-graduate medical schools: Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Respiratory Diseases, Sports Medicine, Reumathology, Nutrition, Audiology and Clinical pathology.
  • Dr.Borghi has a broad experience in the organization and conduction of all phases clinical trial research and in the organization and conduct of many large morbidity and mortality trials (SMILE-1, SMILE-2, SMILE-3; SHELL, DRAMI, FAMIS, INTIME-1) in hypertension and coronary artery disease.

  • Dr.Borghi is currently member of the Steering Committee of two European surveys focused on peripheral artery disease (PANDORA Study) and management of CV risk factors (EURIKA Study). He is also the principal investigator of the SMILE-4 study dealing with the relationship between ACE-inhibitors, ASA and risk of LVD in patients with MI.
  • Dr.Borghi is member of many international scientific societies (International Society of Hypertension, European Society of Hypertension, American Society of Hypertension, European Society of Cardiology, American Society of Diabetes) and is author and co-author of over 650 peer-review scientific publications and contributions in the field of hypertension and drug treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
