Associate Professor of General and Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna. Her research, at the interface of bioinorganic chemistry, biochemistry, and structural biology, investigates how metals and structural disorder regulate protein function and interactions.
A major focus of her research is on the molecular mechanisms linking exposure to nickel-containing pollutants to lung carcinogenesis. In this context, she studies NDRG1, a protein containing an intrinsically disordered region and involved in tumor progression. This work serves as a model to explore new strategies for the pharmacological modulation of intrinsically disordered regions.
In parallel, she investigates the mechanisms regulating transition-metal homeostasis, particularly nickel homeostasis, in eukaryotic and prokaryotic systems, with the aim of understanding the molecular mechanisms of disease and identifying new opportunities for biomedical intervention.
