Alessandro Poli was born in Roccafluvione (Ascoli Piceno, Italy)
on October 2nd, 1943. 1973: degree in Biology Sciences at
University of Bologna. 1979: was spent in Norway (Oslo) at the
Department of Tissue Culture of the Norsk Hydro's Institute for
Cancer Research working on the control of protein synthesis in
hepatocyte and hepatoma cell coltures. 1987: winner of the
competition as Associate Professor of General Physiology in the
Faculty of Sciences at the University of Bologna. 1987: member of
American Neuroscience Society 1990: member of Purine Club 1987 to
date: teacher of General Physiology, Animal ecophysiology and
Marine Physiology in the faculties of Biological Sciences and
Natural Sciences of University of Bologna.
Apart the first period of research regarding hepatic metabolism,
the scientific interest was focused on several neurobiology fields,
in particular on the function of excitatory aminoacidic
neurotransmitters in different vertebrate brain areas and their
modulation by adenosine receptors and the interaction between
adenosine and metabotropic glutamate receptors on vulnerability to
hypoxic brain damage. At present, the field of interest was moved
also to guanosine and its modulatory functions, together with the
roles of the enzymes involved in purine salvage pathway of the
central nervous system. Over 60 articles in International Journals
have been published.
